"Somewhere else...

...Doomsday is coming!"

When CGC 9.8 copies of Superman: The Man of Steel #17 and 18 (first cameo and first full appearance of Doomsday) started getting hot in the market in the early 2010s, the question was, when would a 9.8 of second printing for #17 appear? There was talk then of this second printing being a true unicorn in 9.8. As the years have gone by the second printing of this book is now the easiest of the four second printings of Doomsday teaser/cameo issues to find online in 9.8 grade, the other three issues as of this writing have much lower 9.8 numbers in the CGC census - and who knows what’s still out there in the woodwork.

Rarity debate and perception aside, I enjoy the book for the cover aesthetic, the green background along with the title header color scheme look good. This issue has a common flaw on most of the 9.8 copies I’ve seen for sale of the years, the bottom left corner tends to be blunted. This particular piece is actually the third copy of this book I’ve owned in 9.8 grade. I purchased the very first 9.8 to be graded, which I later used as part of a trade for Action Comics #466 (12/76) from the Mass Copy pedigree. Later on I found another 9.8 example, but I sold it off because the back white cover started to brown with age - a sad fact now for most books from this era. The third time was better for me but my OCD will never go away, so if I ever see another 9.8 example that looks absolutely flawless…

Story continued in Superman #73 (11/92).
