HERE IT IS! THE COMIC MADE HISTORIC THROUGH JOURNAL LORE!
About two years ago, I missed out on the first 9.8 copy of New Mutants 47 to exist. My fellow Mutie enthusiast, TNerb managed to purchase it during a 20 minute gap in my ever watchful viewing of World Wide Comics' new products page.
I was miserable about missing it and with good reason. Another 9.8 copy never has shown up since! But I was glad at least another friend and fan was enjoying it, and figured it would only be a matter of time.
Then along came Ronnylama. He contacted me and told me he had what he thought was a definite 9.8 contender of the issue and asked if I wanted it to try for the grade!
At first I didn't know what to make of the whole affair. Then I learned that Ronnylama was an extraordinarily generous individual who wanted nothing but to be helpful to others.
I told him I would be happy to accept the issue and he even offered to send a number of other comics that were part of sets I am putting together, in case I might want to try for high grades on them as well. I have a couple of them being graded as I write this and will soon get them back.
Once I received this issue, I examined it thoroughly and agreed with Ronnylama that it had a very good chance at 9.8. I was just about to send it with a few others to get graded when I discovered that Chris Claremont was going to be at the Megacon and figured I may as well get it signed and graded.
That way, if it came back as 9.8, it would be not only the second copy to reach the grade, but it would be the ONLY 9.8 SS copy!
With both TNerb and Ronnylama cheering me on, I went to the Megacon and after getting 47 signatures on 43 items, the moment of truth came.
SS 9.8 White Pages Signed by Chris Claremont!!!!
I nearly cried when I saw it had achieved what all three of us had been hoping for, for over three months!
I HEREBY DEDICATE THIS COMIC TO RONNYLAMA AND TNERB! May your encouragement, enthusiasm, and generosity come back to you a hundredfold! I will forever consider both of you to be cherished friends!
PS: For those die hard collectors out there, I did NOT have it pressed or anything else before grading. This was simply a fantastic raw issue that Ronnylama generously sent to me and I only hope to be able to return the favor someday. :)
