Story Title: SENTINELS

SUMMARY:

Dani escapes from a swamp monster in the Danger Room only to run into a Brood queen and fall a great distance through jungle trees and crash to the ground unconscious.

The other New Mutants members are in town at the mall and strike up conversation with some other young people from a local high school.

They are under surveillance, however, by Henry Peter Gyrich of the National Security Council and Sebastian Shaw, head of the Hellfire Club. Henry is worried that these mutants and others who are popping up everywhere will pose a threat to the well being of the world. Shaw pretends to be on Henry's side but has his own secret agenda of furthering mutant domination and eventually coaxing Xavier's students to join his Hellfire Club.

Back at the mall, Stevie is secretly dragged to an empty storage room by Michael Rossi of Air Force Intelligence, who claims that she is in need of his help.

Meanwhile, some of Henry's agents approach the New Mutants in the mall and tell them to come with them. In order to keep innocent bystanders from being hurt, they comply and follow them into the parking garage. Stevie and Michael show up and all heck breaks loose as the mutants fight the NSC agents and subdue them. Michael is about to take the agents to Xavier's school for questioning when a Group of Sentinels shows up with apparent orders to capture the New Mutants.

Michael is knocked out by some gas from one unit, then Cannonball blasts it right out of the garage. Roberto jumps from the garage to get into the sun and falls 3 stories to land on a car roof. He is unharmed. He then picks up a sentinel by the foot and accidentally hurls it right into the mall. Luckily, no one is hurt and he rips it's head off.

Another unit freezes Cannonball solid, and Karma possesses him to activate his powers and blast him free to shoot into the sky, taking the sentinel with him.

Meanwhile, Karma is vulnerable to attack from the last unit, so the others distract it just long enough for Cannonball to blast downward from the sky with the other unit in tow, destroying both units and ending the fight.

Karma mentally forces one of the NSC agents to confess to the police and everyone heads back to the school. They find Dani out cold in the Danger Room and when she relates what happened, Stevie begins to suspect Charles of Brood possession. She is right, as Charles does indeed have a Brood queen slowly growing inside him...

PERSONAL COMMENTS:

I found this issue very interesting. I had heard of the Sentinels but this was my 1st real view of them in a series I was reading. They really didn't stand much of a chance against the New Mutants, but I could see how they would probably improve in their capabilities and possibly become far more dangerous later on.

This issue was also my first exposure to the Hellfire Club, at least in mention anyway. Shaw was still a mystery for the most part.

Seeing Karma possess one of her own team mates was a little disturbing to me at the time. I could see why she had been used by her uncle in the past to do some pretty nasty things to people. Luckily in this case she was actually helping Sam.

Sam was still my favorite character, so it was cool to see him take out BOTH of the last 2 Sentinels!

I became very worried about Professor X being possessed by a Brood Queen. I didn't know all the details of the Brood but I had seen the movie "Alien" by this time and didn't see how this could possibly be any better in its final results.

By the time I finished reading this issue, I had come to realize that much of the universe of this series was taken from the Uncanny X-Men series. This series is what caused me to start collecting and reading THAT series.

Oh, please let Professor X come through okay, I thought to myself…
