ISSUE SYNOPSIS: Spawn the Impaler (part 1 of 3)

In the Romanian countryside, a group of soldiers bind a woman to a poll. After freeing herself from the bonds, she attempts to fight off her attackers but is immediately shot and killed. Her blood seeps into the ground and fuels the resurrection of a Hellspawn, who quickly dispatches the soldiers.

Meanwhile, back in the city, a drug deal goes terribly wrong. Little do they know, the Hellspawn is watching. After seeing two women leave the club, the Hellspawn is satisfied that he’s found the girl he is looking for – Abbie Carafax. The two girls walk into the middle of a gang and are threatened briefly before falling prey to the Hellspawn. When Abbie asks the hero to identify himself, she gets a simple response – one day you will remember.

Back in 1462, Prince Vlad is tasked with protecting his kingdom against invaders. Before leaving for battle, the Prince assures his concubine that he shall soon return.

In the future, the police contact Abbie’s parents to inform them of the terrible murders witnessed by their daughter and committed by an individual known as The Ripper. While visiting with the family, the police notice a mysterious church in the distance. They discover that the church is being turned into a Museum by a man named Drake. Later that night, Drake visits for dinner and Abbie notices a strange familiarity in the man’s voice and appearance. He assures her that his identity will “come back to her in time.”

NUMBER OF SALES: 172,838 preorders reported by Diamond Comic Distributors (4th place). This issue outsold Spawn #55, which was sold during the same month.
