NOTES OF INTEREST: There are 6 different covers available for this issue. There are 3 standard covers (McFarlane, Capullo, Portacio), 2 variant covers (McFarlane, Portacio), and a 2nd print edition. This particular comic is an example of the Portacio sketch cover variant. This particular comic is considered to be the “grail” of all Spawn collectors because this high-demand variant is truly scarce and very expensive to purchase. Some sources indicate a pressrun of only 16 copies. Other sources place the number as high as 100. Most collectors, however, believe there are 50-60 copies in circulation. Regardless of the actual number, this book is very hard to find, especially in high-grade. This is the rarest comic currently represented in the Spawn CGC Registry.

ISSUE SYNOPSIS: - Endgame (part 1 of 12)

Finding a gateway in Hell that will lead him back home, Spawn begins to carry out a plan to permanently resolve his problems. Elsewhere, a comatose patient awakens, much to the surprise and dismay of those around him. A series of messages related to the man’s awakening leads to the suicide of at least one person. Only time will tell if there is a relationship between Spawn and the mysterious patient, who seems to be surrounded by shadowy characters.

CENSUS REPORT: Tied for top census copy as of 6/13

REFLECTIONS: This book was sheer joy to chase and I am thankful that I found a high-grade copy to add to my collection. The most memorable moment was having the book sniped from me during auction. I simply wasn’t quick enough to enter a follow-up bid and I lost at the very last second. It took a lot of dedication to land this variant, but I was able to do so just before the 2013 award deadline. Someone approached me about the book and we were able to work out a reasonable offer, thereby putting to rest a lengthy quest for the rarest of the rare.
