Owner's Description

A return to the cartoon characters in Kite Fun Books brings us to "Popeye Kite Fun Book featuring the Outer Space Kid." This book was prepared in late 1977 for distribution to schools in the spring of 1978.

Popeye was created by Elize Crisler Segar. He first appeared in the daily comic strip "Thimble Theater" on January 17, 1929. Starting in 1933, he also moved onto the big screen staring in his own cartoon shorts. His comic books are many and varied, going back to 1935. He has been licensed over the years to many different comic companies. Like some other kite fun books, we see Popeye switching from Charlton Comics (last issued Jan, 1977) back to Whitman/Gold Key (First new issued May, 1978.) So once again, about the time Western's Whitman/Gold Key Comics were hitting the new stand with a new book, the kite fun book giveaway was being given out.

"Popeye Kite Fun Book featuring the Outer Space Kid." is known from Southern California Edison, Pacific Gas & Electric, and Winnipeg / Manitoba Hydro. The writing has been attributed to Don Chistensen.

Population Statistics (Southern California Edison): Four in 9.8. None graded higher. This copy is graded CGC 9.8 Near Mint to Mint with White Pages.

The comic itself consist of:
(Cover) As shown
(pg 2-7) Popeye Safety Story
(pg 8-9) How to build kites featuring Popeye
(pg 10) Popeye story continued
(pg. 11) Popeye's friend Alice the Goon Maze
(pg. 12) Popeyed Puzzles from Popeye
(pg 13) Popeye's find things that start with P
(pg 14) Sea Hag's Message Puzzle
(pg 15) Last page Popeye Safety Story
(pg 16/back cover) Six Kite Flying Safety Tips.
