   New British Classics Illustrated Comics editions found.

   I started collecting the British series of Classics Illustrated only a few years ago when I realised that all the US comics (mainly DC and Marvel) that I read as a child in the 1960s and started to re-purchase seriously in my 30s were becoming far too expensive to continue collecting.

   
   After amassing some 22 long comic boxes of Bronze and Silver age in the 80s and 90s and early 2000s I sold them all off slowly over the next twenty years.

   
   I won't go into details here but when I retired (at the UK retirement age of 66) a couple of years ago I decided to collect as many of the British Classics Illustrated comics that I could including all the different covers and price variants (1/- and 1/3 for the UK market and 1/6 and 2/- for the New Zealand and Australian variants respectively) and reprint editions that I could.
   
   I read in one of the UK Classics guides that there were 867 different editions in total in the British Series, including NZ and AUS variants and so I decided to try and collect as many of these as I could.

   
   I have so far managed to acquire 619 different editions.
   
   Whilst doing so I have found dozens of issues that do not appear in the two main guides to British Classics, namely Whitworth in the UK and Malin who I believe is American.
   
   I have just discovered my one hundredth "new" issue after stalling on 98 for several months and so I have decided to "go public" with my findings.

   I don't know if my spreadsheet will reproduce on these pages but if it doesn't anyone who is interested in my research can email me for the list at

   PS. If as I suspected the spreadsheet hasn't reproduced in an easily readable format but all the information is at least there. I wanted to publish this research now because I am taking a long holiday from the quest. The physical and mental requirements to compile a list such as this have left me exhausted. Perhaps I shall feel better after a few months' absence.

   The main thing to report is that whilst I have found undocumented issues in the UK and AUS variants the biggest tranche was in the NZ editions.

   So whilst I have now added 100 new issues to the previously known 867 for a new total of 967 editions I do feel that there is still a long way to go.

   Looking for Beta Readers of My Adult Graphic Novel Manuscript

   One of my upcoming projects is a departure from my previous children's books and silly comics. I'm looking for beta readers for the project. The process is pretty simple. I'll post the manuscript to a secure folder, you read it, comment in the document to share your thoughts, and complete a short survey at the end. There is no monetary compensation at this time, but I will provide beta readers with the final product at the end of the project. The manuscript is 30 typed pages (including table of contents, character descriptions, and some other information).    Most self-appointed grading consists of consumer recognition of trusted third-party attestors.

   The trust is implied, but not backed by any credentialed certification or impartiality, and is lacking protocols to address the central question concerning "who verifies the verifier?"

   The original intent of graders was to safeguard protocols from a vulnerability previously thought to be impossible to address in peer-to-peer trading without some third-party grader acting as a verification checkpoint.

   What has happened instead is the confluence of enterprising pursuits which have used every available analog and digital resource to subvert the models of authentication, pricing systems, and exposed their weaknesses to a degree where it has left outdated methods of safeguarding collectors very vulnerable.

   Now, more than ever, we need to be aware of what this looks like in our everyday collecting pursuits, in order to circumnavigate the various methods of deception that have been used to resemble previously known and recongized systems of trust.

   Those that continue to stick their heads in the sand, ignore, or feel that graders will continue to give them the best chance of protection in this ever changing collecting and trading landscape will eventually find out for themselves they have succumbed to the very spoon-feeding that gave graders the foothold in the market they were able to achieve.

    Daredevil #181 features the “death” of Elektra + the 10th cover appearance of Bullseye!

    Overstreet 2023 NM- 9.2 value = $65.

    According to the CGC Census Report as of Tuesday, August 22, 2023, out of a total of 5,984 Universal copies graded, only 1,459 copies were graded in 9.8 with ONLY 6 copies graded higher in 9.9!

    With these statistics in mind, this represents a RARITY FACTOR of 24.38% of the total population.

    However, this is the much RARER Newsstand Edition Variant, which means that you can estimate that ONLY 2-4% of all 9.8s are Newsstand Edition copies!

    Published in April of 1982, the legendary Frank Miller (penciller) & Klaus Janson (inker) rendered a classic Bullseye Vs. Elektra battle cover!

    Frank Miller continued to push the envelope, as he decided to have Bullseye “kill” Elektra in this historic issue! In turn, this tragic event would add onto Bullseye’s resume of all the qualifications that make him Daredevil’s undisputed arch enemy!

    On that note, Daredevil #181 is an absolute MUST-HAVE for any Daredevil, Elektra, or Bullseye fan and/or collector!

    In my opinion, Bullseye is one of the most psychotic and deranged villains ever created by Marvel! As a result, Bullseye’s early cover appearances are some of the most violent, brutal, and entertaining in comics and are HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE!

    In 1993, I Wanted To Be The Next Jim Lee

    Sorting through the boxes of yesteryear, like we all do, I came across my college-era portfolio of work. Looking through the commercial-style art, including a mock up and color call-out for a Comtrex medicine box (how exciting!) I happened across all my comic-book drawings that I made when I wasn't busy doing homework or working.

    1992 was the beginning of an interesting time in my life. I graduated high school in 1991 and got a full-time job. I also managed to spend a little on comic books - I had taken quite a few years off from comics to chase girls, do some underage drinking and work on my car. I had a steady girlfriend, steady job and I didn't drink on work nights - so that left a little extra cash to buy comic books. I was immediately taken by Whilce Portacio's run on X-Men. I'd quit reading the X-Men back around #236, and this new storyline with a dude named 'Bishop' was really intriguing. I got hooked all over again at the ripe old age of 19.

    By 1993, I had saved up enough money and courage to go off to college - in Denver, Colorado. I was accepted into two art schools there, and I had made my pick (the cheapest one). With the help of my mother, I secured a job and an apartment - I loaded up my 1970 Impala with everything I owned, including my short box of comics and off I went.

    My classes were the typical art fare: still life drawing, anatomy, nude drawings, color theory. Impatient as I was, I wasn't getting the fulfillment of what I wanted to do while practicing the foundations of artistic skill. I was also knee-deep in comic shops at the height of the hobby living in Denver, it was only a matter of time before my passion for drawing would meet my interest in the hobby. I believe I even saw the Rob Liefeld Levis commercial on re-runs of Married...with Children back then.

    All these things came together for a wonderful period of inspiration. So many great artists back then, so many styles to explore. My young brain was excited about the prospect of being a comic artist - even though I had barely made the first step in going to school for art.

    Ahh, but that's the joy of being young and inexperienced. I cranked out all sorts of work in addition to my schoolwork. I dabbled in different styles, mimicking my favorite artists at the time - trying to find my own style and method by emulating others.

    In the years since, I never became a comic artist. I owned a comic shop. I worked for an advertising agency for 15 years, I taught graphic design at MSU and I had my own niche as a digital artist for almost 20 years - and finally, I've settled into being a restaurant owner. But not a day goes by that I work towards meeting my goal of giving myself enough time to finally become a comic book artist.

    As the old adage goes - and one I absolutely believe in: "It's never too late to be what you could have been"

    I distinctly remember wanting to draw something and utilize the 'Psylocke' style shading on clothing:

    

    Always loved Rogue, this was a pointilism piece as a traditional 'Southern Belle'

    Boy, when Jae Lee hit the scene, it was a whole 'nuther world of ink style. I loved his work:

    

    Wolverine remained my favorite character in my 20s, just like he was when I was a kid. I loved drawing Bloody Wolverine!

    THE BUILD UP JOURNAL: Coming soon to a Christmas near you - mattn792's 4th Annual Charity Thread! With a new twist...

    Hello all!  As many of you probably already know, I've run a little charity thread for the past three years in G/S/B, where @jaybuck43 and I pick a worthy cause or two to raise money for, I inevitably finish a strong second in whatever gentlemen's bet we agree to, and then I put up the seed money.  Myself and several generous boardies put up books to give away, folks pledge money, and we raise some good dough for our chosen cause(s).  Simple, right?

    And this year will largely go the same way, except that you'll all have a chance to really make me earn it this year!  I wanted to do this little preview journal as much for myself as for all of you, because I'm attempting a feat that I'd never have even dreamed of accomplishing prior to meeting my fiancée, who is a bonafide badazz with 4 Iron Mans under her belt (if you don't know why this is impressive, see here - Ironman Distances: How Long is an Ironman Triathlon Race? (bettertriathlete.com)).

    No, we're not jumping straight into an Iron Man together.  She wrapped up toting our daughter around 24/7 in mid-March, and at this particular juncture, I'm pretty sure I'd turn into something like this by the 2/3 point at the latest:

    

    
    So what is that we've undertaken and will underpin this year's charity thread?  That would be the Dopey Challenge, hosted by Disney World this coming January.  What the hell is that you may ask?  Well Disney hosts a 5K, 10K, 1/2 marathon, and marathon on consecutive days.  And the Dopey Challenge is to finish...all of them.  48.7 miles in 4 days, with the distances basically doubling each day.  Don't believe me?  Check it out - Challenges | Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend | runDisney. 

    When the time comes, participants can have all sorts of fun with their pledges - per mile, per race finished, betting against me finishing, time bonuses, whatever!  I think we'll once again have a great time.  The thread itself won't launch until December as usual, but stay tuned to this journal for some updates on how training is going, how I'm feeling overall, what my time goals are, etc.  I'll keep using this same entry to provide updates in the comments section.

    Picked up a Ghosts #48 CGC 9.8 WP from a ComicLink auction to add to my DC Bicentennial collection. An incremental increase in points from 60 to 96 (CGC 9.6 to 9.8) but every little bit helps!

    This brings my total of CGC 9.8 copies in this 33-comic set to 19 (15 in WP). Still got 8x in 9.6, and 3x each in 9.4 and 9.0. Really, really want to upgrade those in 9.0 

    I know there are 9.8 copies of Batman Family and Weird War Tales on eBay but the asking prices are, IMHO, ridiculous so I won't be upgrading those issues anytime soon.

    I'm going to take an opportunity about once a week to post a book from my personal collection.
    
    I'll try to share the when, where, and why each book was chosen.
    (this all depends on if I can remember or not...)
    
    My ever-evolving personal collection consists of 49 CGC slabs (38 Signature Series / 11 Universal) and 1 raw book.
    Once CGC grades treasury sized books it'll be a solid 50 CGC'd.
    
    Why 50?
    It is the number of books that easily fits into two short boxes.
    Just enough to grab in case of an emergency or not take up too much room in the car.
    
    Why ever-evolving?
    I read a post many moons ago on these boards about ensuring that the handling of your collection was easy on your family when you pass away.
    In it, someone mentioned selling 10% of your books per year once turning 40-years-old.
    They also stressed to continuously refine your books down to a Top 10 that would be easy for your family to liquidate upon death.
    
    Over the past 5 years I have reduced my collection from 34 short boxes down to 16 boxes through donation, selling, and recycling efforts.

    6 short boxes of CGC'd comics to be sold via eBay
    2 short boxes of personal collection
    
    As books are sold throughout the year money gets set aside to reinvest into / 'improve' the personal collection.
    If a new book is purchased with the intent to add it to the personal collection (aka not a 'flip') then a book has to be taken out 'to make space'.

    To provide a clearer understanding, in 2022 I removed the following comics from my personal collection to allow new books to join:
    All-Star Superman #1 German Edition 9.6 signed by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely 
    Avengers #4 1.0
    
    That is all to say that at some point some of the books featured in this thread will not make the cut going in to the next year.
    (I will edit posts when a book has transitioned out of the collection)

    Fantastic Four 1/2 Wizard Publication

     

    I’m looking for some help in finding Fantastic Four 1/2 Wizard Publication.

    There are two versions:

    The regular edition — which is easily found on eBay. I’m positing a photo of my copy signed by Stan Lee..

    Then there is the Wizard Authentic version. According to the Society there is a Wizard Seal on the cover.

    ‘Personally in fifteen plus years of collecting (This Time) I’ve never seen one!

    Any help in finding one would be greatly appreciated.

    Marvel Multi-Pack set scoring.

    I recently added a Thor 274 Multi-pack edition to my set. It's a nice 9.4 Universal. I noticed that I received 18 points for adding it. However, if it was just a Univeral copy I would have received 20 points for adding it. I looked at the different scores for issue 274, Universal and Multipack Universal. Some same grades had the identical point scores, but some did not.  It was really haphazard.  Does anyone know why some grades would get the same point total and others different for the same grade? Just wondering. I've got it and a Thor 228 Savannah shown that just got back from CGC.
