Won a FF #151 comic book at a spelling bee at the age of 10 at Nolan Middle School in Detroit, Michigan 1976 (tough 'hood). Dad bought a Mighty Samson #2 by Gold Key for me in Nebraska, on the move out to Arvada, Colorado (still have it, in poor condition). In Colorado mom began bringing me a few comic books from her job at Denver General hospital. They were mostly Whitman reprints. After having so much fun reading them, and finding out that they were able to be purchased at the local convenience store, I decided to collect. I only liked the Marvel brand initially, though there were a few DCs I would buy sparingly. I was shocked to find out that they once only costed 12 cents after my best friend gave me his older sister's X-Men #37, I decided to hunt for some. I went to garage sales at first. Then I discovered Mile High Comics, and it was all over! I just wasn't rich enough to buy everything I wanted (my problem still!) I had over 3500 comics by the time I graduated High School, including 161 issues of Thor, the entire Byrne X-Men run & Hulk 181. I sold these to pay for some of my college tuition. I've started & ended collecting several times to date. I buy when I have $$$ and I sell when I'm broke (quite often, esp. since I now have a family w/4 kids). Its still fun, but now I just buy to invest...though it often seems I buy too high and sell too low. Oh well...
