Until the age of 17, I lived in Manhattan, New York City. I am 59 now, and live in Pennsylvania.
When I lived in NYC, I collected comics, right off the newsstand, and bought "used" comics from bookstores in Greenwich Village & thereabouts.
I collected mostly newsstand fresh comics. If I liked the artist that issue(Ditko, Wrightson, Adams, Frazetta etc.) I would buy 2 or 3 of the same issue, almost always with my lunch money for school. (I was a skinny kid then).
From 1964 to 1971, I collected about 2,000 Marvel, DC, (and a few other) comics. NEVER folded the cover back, and lost some friends who tried that with my comics and got reprimanded by me. I felt guilty for doing that, but it's just the way I was.
I am one of those cases where my mother DID NOT get ahold of "those stupid comic books", and throw them away.
I can still hear the grown-up criticism thrown my way for that "worthless comic book clutter."
Looks like MY investment in comics did MUCH better as far as gaining value than ANYTHING those Nixon-era adults had or have now.
Anyway, hauling these comic books around for the last 46 years hasn't been easy, and caused much tension in my relationships over the years, but alas, I still have all 2,000 books in my office, bagged, boarded & boxed, and now I am beginning to CGC them now that apparently, a grading system seems to finally be in place as proved in the last 9 or so years.
It is kinda funny when I see you younger people who collect comics and have to figure out how much you paid for any particular one. In regard to my collection, I just look at the cover. Most say 12 cents.
