Set Description
Everyone has a special skill- some people are really good at basketball, some people are really good at skateboarding, some people are really good at lying and betraying the people they swore to protect, some people are really good at making buildings and bridges and lava lamps. Some people are really creative and talented and they make the most beautiful of things-
These are those beautiful things-

Set Goals
I exalt sketched comic book covers and I have hyper-admiration and maximum-gratitude for the people that use the power of the pen to propel their wonderful ideas and inspiring images out into what's left of this bizarre life that I exist in. The skill and abilities that some of these particular artist posses is beyond rational explanation. (No movie-star signature obstructions and No computer-scanner enhanced nonsense in this all-organic natural utopia) I hope to gather up and share as much of this magic that I can- and I will continue to try and support these wonderful, always polite, usually humble, master creators- "May we meet on the road to happy destiny" ...("and can I please get on your commissions list?")

Special Thanks to ALL the artists who are making life better for everyone and supplying my passion with wonderful creations:

*This book graded 9.8 because it was thrust in my hands**- and against my better judgement- and the pleading of strangers- I found myself walking through a comic show holding this book un-bagged following a witness to get it signed by a voice actor that I could have cared less about. The witness and I didn't even know who we were being sent to- I was following him-he was following me- I'm not going to lie- I was a little bummed how was put into the situation- and I didn't want that big silver signature on top if this epic piece of art created by Jeff and Steve.

**When I did finally get to see it all I could do is smile and say "Holy Shit" over and over- my goal to keep a constant stream off Jeff's work landing in this set is working out- right now I have a connecting cover going with him- and Steve Lydic has 3 of Jeff's covers he's coloring- There is a reason "1st published cover by Jeff Edwards" is on the label- because Jeff will take over the whole god damn universe with his skills.

SIGNED & SKETCH BY FRANK KADAR ON 4/4/19 (should say "PAINTED")

First let me say this is totally a true story-

I'm in Burbank, California sometime back- and i end up at the mall- I'm strolling through the food court and i just happen to see my old buddy George- I roll up on George- we hug- exchange formalities- and then we get some food court food and start talking about his deal with Disney (my friend George invented Star Wars btw)- which lead us to talking about Marvel- which lead us to talking about our favorite villains- George's favorite villain was some random shit i had never even heard of from some comic that I don't even think existed- mine of course is Morbius the Living Vampire, a.k.a. Dr. Michael Morbius, Ph.D- In one the many Spider-Man story arcs somewhere in one of the many Spidey universes there was a version of Morbius that absolutely wrecks Peter Parker- I wont spoil it- but Peter gets his ass kicked so bad that Aunt May learns the truth! George knows I like sketch covers- so we go back to the ranch, we go into his office (where he keeps all his Cliff Notes)- he flips through his rolodex and pulls out Frank Kadar's business card (with Kraven on it of course)- George says- "Call this dude- we work together all the time- he will bring this Morbius to you"-

I was able to make contact with Mr Kadar- and Mr Kadar agreed to bring me some Morbius- Frank brought me Morbius- (and in a very timely manner-)

(When I showed it to George- he pulled down his glasses from his eyes- and winked at me)

*The first time I laid eyes on this amazing piece of work I knew I was going to do any shady, dirty, sleazy thing I could do to get my grubby hands on it- (even if the book did reside all the over in Tokyo Japan)-- I sacrificed a stack of Walking Dead books to procure this stupendous sketch. Truly a sight to behold. Steven Segovia is a master of his craft.
...and who is this Mr. Segovia?
Here are the 2 statements I found- along with a hundred-mile trail of endless perfect art:

"Filipino artist, currently drawing Dark Wolverine for Marvel and Reign in Hell for DC Comics."

"Draws comics for Dynamite, DC comics, Marvel and Valiant Entertainment and currently working on Action Comics for DC"

simply amazing.

(*I picked this up from Steve at a show- He was showing me an original cover that was interested in getting- while he was making his pitch- a person who will not be named sort of butted in on our talk- and bolstered his views into a potential sale- Steve wasn't happy with this- and I don't blame him- I was having some good quality time with Steve- something I am lucky to get maybe once a year- and this person was a total buzzkill- and this cover is pretty good too.

Thanks Steve!

SIGNED & SKETCH BY SARA RICHARD ON 2/13/15

***This is what you find if you go to Sara's' website (I thought it was pretty impressive):

"I’m an artist from a little old woodsy town in New Hampshire.
I love to create and when I’m not making art I’m daydreaming of future pieces. I love to paint strange juxtapositions and sustained, borderline-awkward eye contact. I’m constantly trying to visualize in an illustration what can’t be seen in the real world. Painting wind is my favorite. I feel you can’t ever have enough colors in your art. That is what the Mesiah Lisa Frank taught me when I was a wee-nut.

While spare time can be hard to come by in between deadlines, I love traveling and while doing that I try a bit of ghost hunting. I am on a quest to see my first full on ghost. Ask me about the closest I’ve come to that craziness. It’s a fun story involving The Queen Mary in Long Beach. I wish I could live in that ship! My other life journeys involve finding the best pulled pork and wonton soup. Though not together. Then I hang glide during nice weather and art-fu the rest of the time. Currently various British comedy episodes fill in the gaps and karaoke finishes it all off. When back in New Hampshire I can be found scouring (literally) cemeteries restoring and cleaning old gravestones with my mom.

Credits of past work are that I’ve illustrated the kid’s book from Yen Press, “Kitty and Dino” which was nominated for a 2013 Eisner Award (Best Publication for Young Readers) and have been steadily working on variant covers for the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic comic series from IDW. I have also contributed interior art to a couple Pony tales. Other work from IDW includes covers for Jem and The Holograms and an interior story for Ghostbusters. I’m the illustrator of the DC Collectables’ Justice League Tarot Card Set and have done variant covers for Marvel’s Deadpool, Dynamite’s Bob’s Burgers and Oni Press’ Rick and Morty. (Those last two titles are my favorite cartoons and Deadpool was the character to get me back into comics years ago. Life is good.)

A couple last tidbits: I’m heavily inspired by Art Deco, Art Nouveau, and 80’s Fashion. Japanese Ink Paintings (sumi-e) I love for their simplicity in composition, so much so that my signature is “Sara” in katakana. I try to emulate the simplicity and movement of my inspirations in my work.

Lastly, I like saving turtles from busy roads. (Snapping turtles you need a stick to scoot those beautiful monsters across. That is my turtle wisdom to you, reader.)

And also, I’m terrified of centipedes.

Venues my art has been on display:

--So Sara is a bad-ass- and even though I sort of accidently bought this comic- at a time when I did not have the money to pay for it- I don't regret it in the least- This pretty cover by Sara is fueling my new addiction for Spider Gwen sketches- (there is something about the pink/purple/blue that makes me drool)

*Here is the information I clearly stole from other sources about Mr. Suayan.

-Mico Suayan was the Filipino artist tapped to create a store-exclusive Wave cover variant of War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas. Mico Suayan worked on the exclusive Comic Odyssey cover variant, featuring Filipina Marvel superheroine Wave, for War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas

-His full name is Michael Cornelius Suayan. Prior to working for Marvel in 2007, Mico was drawing story boards for a Philippine advertising company.

AND his art is fucking fantastic- you have to look at this book for a second to even realize it IS a sketch-
*This beautiful Batman was randomly included in a grab-bag blind box I purchased- It was originally a 9.6 CBCS graded book- I cracked that thing open immediately to happily get the green label from CGC- where it also graded 9.6.
I'm super-stoked to have some work from Mico- he is a talented fellow indeed.

(when I first heard that the Turtles and Batman were for-reals teaming up- I was all like "whaaaaat?")

*TRUE STORY- when I was 10 years old I begged my Dad to write a check for me for twelve dollars so I could send it in with a coupon out of some sort of comic price guide that would get me the 1st 3 Ninja Turtle books- I sent that check- and I received my books- along with a comic board with a sketch of a turtle on it from one of the artist. At one point I had issues 1-10 (the earlier issues had a bigger cover)- ALL 1st prints- I was 10 years old how I was I supposed to know you weren't supposed to use thumbtacks to stick your cool comics to your bedroom wall-- and maybe I got ripped-off, maybe not- but I took those 10 Ninja Turtle books, and a stack of Garbage Pail Kid cards to the comic shop and traded in the lot for the first 4 issues of Radio-Active Blackbelt Hamsters, regular and 3-D variants. I still have those Hamster books, but I sure wish I had those Turtle books instead ( I also still have all my Space Beaver comics)--

-Like anyone knew that YEARS after the Ninja Turtle comic was out that the Turtles would become huge, I was way past animal comics when the Turtles became a cartoon hit--(I thought it was horrible what they did to the turtles-nothing like the comics)
If anyone out there has a set of 1st print Ninja Turtle books with pinholes in all four corners- those were mine! (sorry I hung them all up on my walls)

*I wasn't trying to be rude when I asked Jeff Edwards personally what planet he was from- because there is no way in all the Hells of this Earth that any mortal can lay down the lines like Jeff. Jeff denies extraterrestrial traits and inter-dimensional travel to be the cause of his unbelievable skills. (I'm still not convinced with his answer- but I'm not going to argue about it)- His work is phenomenal and to have any of it in my little collection is truly an honor.

-and then you sprinkle the classiest color from king-colorer Steve Lydic on top you get some of the best looking sketch covers any earthling has been allowed to witness.

I picked this up in November 2018 at the comic show in Louisville KY- when Jeff asked what I wanted on the back- I told him to do whatever he wanted- "artist choice"-- like I would ever feel like I should be allowed to even ask Jeff to draw anything- that's like telling Wolfgang how to make your chicken pot-pie- Greatness does what needs to be done.

It was long, grueling, agonizing wait- but DAMN!
DYNAMIC DUO IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT!--Jeff and Steve are the Masters of the Universe!

SCOTT HANNA 8/20/17 Edge of Venomverse 1 Signature 9.8 Edge of Venomverse #1

Mathews Rosenberg storyF

SIGNED & SKETCH BY SCOTT HANNA ON 8/20/17 & TODD MCFARLANE ON 8/14/17

*This book is a "double-whammy"- I finally scored a sketch with some Scott Hanna work, and I checked-off getting a McFarlane sig.

Scott Hanna is a true artist: Fandom states:

"He is currently teaching Sequential art and drawing classes at the Arts and Fashion Institute in Bucks County.PA. The School was started by his wife, Fashion Designer Pamela Ptak. He is Also working for both Marvel and DC on numerous titles.

Scott Hanna is an inker in the comic book industry. He have worked with DC Comics and Marvel. He started his career as an inker for Eternity Comics. He then worked for DC at Detective Comics for five years, completing storylines as Knightfall; Contagion; Legacy and Cataclysm. He the worked for Marvel Comics for almost 14 years and inked almost every major character."

WHAMMY!

...and who is this Todd McFarlane guy?

"a Canadian comic book creator and entrepreneur, best known for his work on The Amazing Spider-Man and the horror-fantasy series Spawn.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, McFarlane became a comic book superstar due to his work on Marvel Comics' Spider-Man franchise, on which he was the artist to draw the first full appearances of the supervillain Venom. In 1992, he helped form Image Comics, pulling the occult anti-hero character Spawn from his high school portfolio and updating him for the 1990s. Spawn was a popular hero in the 1990s and encouraged a trend in creator-owned comic book properties.

Since leaving inking duties on Spawn with issue No. 70 (February 1998), McFarlane has illustrated comic books less often, focusing on entrepreneurial efforts, such as McFarlane Toys and Todd McFarlane Entertainment, a film and animation studio. In September 2006, it was announced that McFarlane would be the Art Director of the newly formed 38 Studios, formerly Green Monster Games, founded by major league baseball pitcher Curt Schilling.[2] McFarlane used to be a co-owner of the National Hockey League's Edmonton Oilers before selling his shares to Daryl Katz.[3] He is also a high-profile collector of record-breaking baseballs."

DOUBLE WHAMMY!

(I wonder if Todd has ever hung-out with Ricky, Julian, or Bubbles?)

*I ventured to the Louisville Kentucky comic show so I could finally meet Steve Lydic in person- sitting next to him at the event is probably one of the best artist in the cosmos- Mr. Jeff Edwards. I asked Steve if he would color a Jeff sketch, after he agreed I asked if he would pick one out that he would have fun with. -Steve picked this piece off Jeff's table- and with the help of One Stop Comics and a very grueling wait- this unbelievable creation finally made its way into my very patient hands! Jeff Edwards is the Rodney Mullin of the sketch cover world.

*Marco is becoming on of my favorite artist- His style is amazing, his coloring is insane- all the characters he crams into I cover is amazing, the way he can sketch over the comic title and it looks seamless is uncanny-

Marco runs things in Mexico- so the amount of registered mail I receive has increased 500% in the last few weeks. I wish he would grade his books with CGC-- his name needs to be on the label of the masterpieces that he lays out.

*This is the first Thor sketch I've acquired- I don't think you can get much better than this.

The art on this cover is like a Reece Cup! its got the peanut butter of Ryan Ottley, and the chocolate of Greg Kirkpatrick.

My personal favorite Walking Dead cover is the 100 Ottley sketch- with the blue and silver Walking Dead title (150 Tony Moore variant is a close second)- Well Mr. Kirkpatrick must really like the sketch as well, and did a recreation of it on this Image United comic (whatever the hell that is...)-Greg gives props to Ryan right on the cover- deservingly so...

*Its White Witch (Wanda Zatara) from Marvel/DC's Amalgam Universe-(which I know absolutely nothing about)- But I do know the art is super slick- the lines are perfect and the coloring and shading are totally exploding all over my face right now.

This is the first Garrett Blair sketch to make its way into my dirty hands- and with-in an hour of getting this beauty I nabbed 3 more. I tried to sleuth out some facts on this obviously talented artist by the name of Garrett Blair- but all I came up with was a few things direct off his website where he sells tons of pretty art. This is all he tells us:

"I'm a freelance artist located in Seattle, WA. My current primary focus is pinup art, specializing in traditional, hand-drawn artwork using ink and markers to render beautiful babes!
I also attended Watkins Film School in Nashville, TN majoring in screenwriting."

Im going to try and contact him direct and get a sketch--I Im sold on his skills and ill be on the look-out for more of his graded sketches-(hit me up if you're selling one)

D.C. Comics 10/14

Grant Morrison story
Ivan Reis & Joe Prado art

SIGNED & SKETCH BY STEVE LYDIC ON FRONT & BACK COVER & SKETCH BY DOUG JONES ON 11/11/17

*This sweet sketch came straight from Mr. Lyric's personal collection.

When Mr Lydic first showed me the cover- I assumed it was the creature from "The Shape of Water" movie- which my wife loves- so I was interested immediately- and even though I frown on celeb sigs on these covers-( I understand why its done)*- and I figured my wife would really want this sketch (for me to have)-

SO I've seen the Hellboy movies- but I'm not too familiar with that world- but I guess this is the character from Hellboy- who resembles almost to a fault the creature from "The Shape of Water" movie- which was made by the same guy that made the Hellboy movies- and both fish-creatures are also the same actor- so this accident turned out to be a good mistake--AND- Doug Jones was classy enough to even make a little sketch of his own- so technically- this is a double sketch- Steve Lydic did most of the work- and Doug added a fish- so its NOT a celebrity book (even though Steve Lydic is a celebrity)- its actually a double sketch cover- (so I'm not a total hypocrite)-

(*I understand celeb-signed sketch covers are a thing- and they should be- its the perfect souvenir and time capsule and what could be a better item to have with an autograph on it?-- but there are some covers that are so good that the celebrity's name should not be slathered over a masterpiece in a big gold marker--its a shame that what gets attention first is that sig-- and not the art or the artist, the art becomes the background to the name on it---some art doesn't need to be graffitied by a scribble from a star. Sometimes an artist elevates the cover way past "just a comic book" status.

-Example- I was just at an art exhibit with works from Ralph Steadman- he did a sketch of the day he was with members of The Rolling Stones in the 1970's- and the apartment they were in got raided by police. Its an amazing piece of art- and it does not need Keith Richards or Mic Jagger's name raping the image--This is just my opinion- )

(and yes I compare sketch covers to items hanging in museums)

SECRET HIDDEN 2019 AWARD COMMENT SECTION:
-So by default- (and a little bit of complaining) my fabulous sketch set won a coveted CGC comic set award. The thing that gets me most about the controversial situation surrounding my award is that the judges comments fail to mention my personal favorite artists represented in this set- it would have been nice to seen props given to Jeff Edwards, Marco Carrillo, and Steve Lydic- those dudes bust their asses to make the best art and it would have been nice to see them get some lover- It is still an honor to get this collection marked with the CGC stamp of approval- i will continue to support the artists and do my best on the quest to obtain these magical treats-

Judge's Comments:

MrWalkingDead has compiled an awe inspiring set of sketch covers that are truly out of this world. A beautiful mix, ranging from the likes of George Perez, Tony Moore, Todd Nauck, Ethan Van Sciver, Charlie Adlard, Tim Seeley… The list goes on and on. This set celebrates the creative process and pays respect to some of the industry’s finest. Keep up the great work! We can’t wait to see what you add next!

*First Moon Knight-- I always like when Marco gets extra honors for his amazing work. I fucking love his style.
