Set Description
A lifetime ago I read my first comic book...I was 10, I am now in my 50's going on 10 again. These are my "memory" books. I have owned many comics over the years and they are all gone but the memory books. These are the books that bring a lump to my throat...not for their value but because to me the memories they hold are priceless.

Wonder Woman 7 Modern 9.4 In 1987 when DC rebooted Wonder Woman I was in the Army stationed at Ft Carson in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It was a great time in my life, I had gotten married in 1986, rediscovered my love of comics and had a great starting point with my favorite characters after "Crisis on Infinite Earths". Wonder Woman, Superman, Flash, and so many others along with my new wife just made my life complete. The 1st new Cheetah was just one of the many "firsts" that year...from the 1st time a little kid looked at me while I was wearing my Army uniform in a Wal-Mart to say "Excuse me Mr. Army Man" (made me feel like a hero) to me tucking in my new baby girl in her crib, to living in our 1st apartment together and feeding our little squirrel friend who would take the chocolate covered raisins from our outreached hands. It was a great time to be alive and a most excellent time to read Wonder Woman View Comic

Crisis on Infinite Earths 7 Modern 9.4 Once upon a time almost a year ago my son and I bonded in such a way that words were not necessary. My Dad had just died and my son who I taught the lore of comic characters with and who shares my love of comics took me to a comic store after my Dad's visitation at his church. I picked out a memorable memory from the comics I saw there and when I went to pay for it he said "Dad this one is on me".. that's all he said and all he had to say. He understood and I understood his understanding. Sometimes the universe aligns and you realize you were able to be a better parent than you gave yourself credit for. View Comic
Freedom Fighters 1 Modern 8.5 The Drug store in Greene, Iowa is famous to me for three reasons. First, because I used to drive the clerk crazy when ordering different flavored hand made soda pops one right after another. Chocolate and Cherry Cokes were my favorites and to be fair she was a busy lady and no spring chicken so I'm sure she wasn't a big fan of seeing my face come through the door. Second, the fragrance which hung in the air from the many different candles made any trip there worthwhile and calming. Finally, the spinning book rack on just the right days held magical journeys away from reality when you could find a comic or two that encouraged you to pick them up. On a day such as this I found this book and some of my old friends from the Golden age. Doll man and Uncle Sam were enough to convince me to buy this book. View Comic
Superman 301 Modern 8.0 The Crash Test Dummies have a wonderful song about Superman explaining how he spent his life protecting us and didn't take any money for it, that he could do whatever he wanted for personal gain but chose to live selflessly for mankind. This explains perfectly why he's my hero and why I try my best to live the same way....not because I have to...but rather because it's the right thing to do if you want to live in such a way to care about your neighbors as you want your neighbors to care about you. In the song about Superman, the Crash Test Dummies sang "Superman never made any money saving the world from Solomon Grundy and sometimes I despair the world will ever see another man like him". I feel the same way...but it's a goal we certainly can reach for if we try. I actually felt bad for Grundy in this story because all he wanted was a friend. For the safety of the earth Superman stranded Grundy on the moon....Superman must have been torn up about the choice he felt he had to make...being a hero is never easy sadly. If anyone reads this, watch the song video by the Crash Test Dummies....you'll be glad you did. https://youtu.be/EeyhKWjQaKk View Comic
Firestorm 1 Modern 9.6 Ohhhh how I love this comic book! From the 1st moment I discovered it on the comic book rack spinner and picked it up to leaf through it, I knew this character would endure the test of time. The cover called "pick me up", the character of Firestorm whispered in my ear "have fun" and I did...and still do...to this very day one of my favorite books to read! View Comic
Superboy 9 Modern 9.6 This is the one I almost missed reading. There are times when you look at the comic books to buy and realize that your funds won't let you buy everything you'd like. So I remember seeing the cover of this book and thinking...I wish I could buy just one more. As it happens sometimes I had to pass on it with the same phrase I would tell my children when they were little..."Maybe sometime". They all understood the hidden meaning behind the phrase after awhile and didn't like to hear it...me neither. Sometimes later on in life you are dealt a better hand and you can tip your 10 gallon hat to the dealer, collect your winnings and count yourself lucky. So when that day arrived I tracked down a copy of Superboy #9 with King Shark in it. Great story, great artwork...lady luck was indeed kind. View Comic
Batman and Me 1 Modern 9.4 This is a very rare comic from 1994. In fact since 1994 I have seen exactly 5 copies. Much like "X-Men and Captain Universe: Slepping Giants" it was a personalized comic that came out about the same time as the Batman animated series. I think people thought it was a kiddie comic book and because of that fact they left it alone. It is however vastly superior in quality than the X-Men personalized comic and you get to team up with Batman. Fun story with three villians (Catwoman, Joker, and the riddler). To date I haven't been able to find much information about this comic and apparently it is quite a rare find. Personally, I would like to know how many copies still exist. View Comic
Captain Marvel Adventures 30 Universal 6.0 When I was 11 years old there was this man down the street that knew that wanted to encourage my reading and the joy that comes from it. He offered to sell me a box of comics he had when he was a boy and liked to read. When I paid him the $5.00 I could barely contain my joy....sooo many comics. I hurried home and began to read them and sift through the box. This one was my favorite. I watched "Shazam!" on TV and at 57 I still remember the Society of evil story. I literally was shaking with excitement while going through the box of comics. I even read the torn up ones in the bottom of the box. I almost threw out a Donald the Duck book because I could barely read it due to it missing the cover and being ripped up. I was shocked when I discovered "Donald the Duck and the Mummy's Ring" in a recently purchased Overstreet Price Guide just by the title of the story. When I went into the Army I contacted a kid down the street and hand delivered a gift box of reading material from when I was a kid in the mid 70's so the joy of reading might continue. View Comic
Plop! 1 Universal 9.4 From the 1st time I read about Pedigree comics in the 1970's Overstreet Price Guide's I always wanted to own one. I love Plop! and this issue has such fun stories and great artwork and it's a comic I always wished I owned...and now I do. I have always admired Basil Wolverton and his detailed depictions of the bizarre, Sergio Aragonés and his wonderful cartoons, and Bernie Wrightson. Bernie's stunning artwork alone is worth the price of admission. They all come together in this amazing memory book....perfect...just perfect in my world. View Comic
Action Comics 431 Universal 9.4 I'm guessing every comic book enthusiast has "The ONE". That one book they read so many times that they lost track and what they were left with was great memories of the story and even the smell of the book's ink. This is my "The ONE". When I was done with this book as a kid two things stood out to me. First, my favorite comic was in tatters from reading it so many times, and I would always remember being in my childhood bed and reading the story just like it was yesterday....and I have....from the feel of the blankets on my bed to the warmth and safety I felt listening to my still living parents (long gone now) in the background of my house to the world of Superman and Curt Swan. Who knew that one book could rekindle such wonderful memories....and a lifelong love of Superman. Thanks to a comic book artist by the name of Jeffery Moy, Superman visited me in Greene, Iowa in 1999. This year in June I will return the favor and visit him in Metropolis, Illinois. View Comic
Shazam 1 Universal 8.0 Captain Marvel and I go Waaayyy back. Sure I knew of Superman and he would eventually become my favorite Hero but the first hero in my life was Captain Marvel. From the times I read his comics to the many times I watched him on Saturday mornings while wearing my pajamas and eating my Count Chocula or Franken Berry cereal. In my eyes Captain Marvel was real since I saw him on T.V. and I always listened to his advice at the end of each episode. Since my family life seemed far from normal and I felt alone I gravitated to his lessons on life and being a good person. The morals he shared beginning in 1974 have stayed with me even to this day. Now that I am 57 years old I still want to be a hero and have tried my best through the various jobs of my life. I have always tried to live my life using kindness and compassion thanks to the examples I found through the adventures of the good Captain. I received this signed picture this year reminding me of one of the greatest lessons anyone could learn....Everyone brings something valuable to the table...Even me. I bought Shazam! #1 at my local drug store and can still hear the spinning comic rack when it turned and still smell the candles at the drug store...good times View Comic

Detective Comics 475 Modern 9.2 In 1978 I was 15 and by this time I was a real fan of comic books. A few years earlier a family friend sold me a box of comics he had saved from when he was he was a kid and from that moment I was hooked. In 1978 I received an allowance of $5.00 dollars a week and I saved it all for the glorious comic book spinning rack at Eddie’s mini mart. I would weekly scour the rack looking for the latest and the best and beg my Mom to take me there since it was in the next town over. I remember like yesterday finding Detective Comics 475 in the rack and thinking “What a cool Joker cover, this goes right in my pile” I said “pile” because $5.00 bought a whole lot of comics in the 70’s. So on the way home I would pick the best of my pile to read on the way back while my Mom drove. Right away I thought this comic was above the norm. The artwork was just great and the story…my my what a story. The Joker trying to get royalties from fish he gave his grinning smile to and then killing people in front of the Batman by using his Joker toxin…I mean…who does that?!? It reminded me of how twisted the Joker could be, like the time he knew it would be so hard to see the road because of weather conditions that he repainted the white lines on the road which lead the driver to crash off a cliff. Again…who in their right mind does that!?! Oh yeah…we’re talking about the Joker here. View Comic
Detective Comics 476 Modern 9.2 After going to Eddie’s mini mart to spend my allowance where I purchased Detective Comics 475, the next month would drag on painfully as I had to wait for the second part of the comic book. To be sure there would be other comic books to occupy my heart until and if…and that was a big “IF” I could find the other part of the story to complete the tale. These were the days of collecting comic books thru spinning racks and magazine displays and you hoped nobody beat you to it and took the comic you wanted or that nobody thumbed thru the books and bending them…comic stores?..that was just a dream in the early 70’s. IF you were lucky you could find someone who would trade for the book you wanted or you could send away for a mimeographed selling list of what somebody else MAY have. Trust me, you always had to list alternate issue numbers too in case they couldn’t send what you wanted . So after an agonizing wait the month passed and I went back to Eddie’s mini mart to look for part two of what years later would be described as one of the best Batman/Joker stories of them all…it was even up for an award or two. I remember the day vividly because I had to realllly beg Mom to take me because it was a dark and gloomy day. The sky was grey and I can still hear the windshield wipers keeping cadence with the rain hitting the car. When I got to Eddie’s the spinning rack was full of comics…new comics! What joy I felt as I ravaged thru the books looking for my favorites…and…it…was…there…Detective Comics 476. In mint condition no less. I swooped in like a bird of prey. Mine…all mine! On the way home I began to read to my hearts content. What makes this story so memorable is not only the story but the ambience of the trip to and from Eddie’s mini mart. The story in Detective comics 475 and 476 took place under dark and stormy conditions…just like in the car. Mom drove in silence with the only noise being the weather outside the car and in the comic book I was reading. When the story ended we pulled into our driveway…perfect, just a perfect day to read the most wonderful conclusion of this Batman/Joker story. View Comic
Micronauts 8 Modern 9.6 Good Gravy did I enjoy "The Micronauts" comic book! It was one of my favorites due to the wonderful unique artwork and concept. The 1st time I read Captain Universe I thought "How cool is that, anyone could become this Superhero" I would go on to read about other people who got to use the Uni-Power until I even got to wield it too (but that's another story for another time). I had the green time traveler toy as a kid and between the toys and the comic books I was in 7th Heaven. View Comic
Crisis on Infinite Earths 8 Modern 9.6 In 1983 when I went into the United States Army as a Chaplain's Assistant I had already given all my comic books to the kid down the street in the hopes of keeping the torch going by encouraging comic book reading. I concentrated on learning my job and applying kindness and compassion to those I interacted with. When I wore my Army uniform I felt like a potential hero for the first time in my life. I was an Ambassador in my field and the Army in general and I didn't take it lightly. I met many good people while working in the service who felt the same way and although I no longer was reading comic books I never stopped living the ideals of what heroes like Superman embodied. So when I saw the Crisis on Infinite Earths comics in the PX I browsed through them but it wasn't until a friend told me of all the changes going on in the DC universe that I returned to comic reading. The death of the Flash and the multiverse caught me by surprise. I have had the joy of teaching my three children all about the classic Super Heroes and now that they are grown up two of the three have continued being fans. My son who ran in track shares my love for the Flash and when my Dad passed away he didn't know what he could say to help me through the mourning. He took me to our local comic shop and bought me Crisis on Infinite Earths #7 and ordered this copy of Crisis #8. It was his way of letting me know he was there for me as was the picture he asked John Wesley Shipp to sign for me with this special message. I felt my son's heartfelt hug when I needed it and he showed me through his actions what I already knew deep inside. When we really need each other we will always be there ...in a Flash. View Comic

Superman 75 Modern 9.0 On August 14th 2020 my Dad died...and he is on my mind today. I will always remember that day. He was the only one who got really got me. I lost my best friend that day and it hurt...It also hurt when I thought they were going to kill Superman too. When I first heard the news that DC had decided to kill Superman I remember thinking…he can’t die. But then everyone around the world started chiming in…he was going to die…for real. There was an immediate pain in the pit of my stomach. He can’t die…He was the best of the heroes! Then the storyline began to hit the shelves and I was literally watching Superman being beaten to a pulp. Cuts and bruises and blood and the pain that I had knowing that this was going to be his swan song. On the day he died I was working the 3rd shift and the comic store didn’t open until 10:00am…I got off at 7:00am so I drove over to the parking lot of the comic store and waited…and waited. What I remember most about the day was it was drizzling out and that as I walked to door of the shop people followed me. I made the mistake of holding the door for people and they rushed in and didn’t return the door holding favor. Thankfully by the time I got to the black bag version there were a few left. I bought mine and read it…and they did it...They killed my favorite hero. and then came his funeral…flash forward to my Dad 's memorial service…He died…the only thing remaining was the pain in my stomach from when I learned that he was going to die soon and that I couldn't change that fact no matter how much I wanted to. Since I knew his time was short at least I had time to prepare for it…kinda.Just like when my Dad died I will always remember the day Superman died…I knew where I was that day and I knew where I was when my Dad died…sitting with him. At my Dad's memorial service people shared stories about how he was important to them and how he made a difference in their lives. They knew him as a good man. I knew him as my Dad and my favorite hero of all…I take great joy in the fact that two of my three children grew to love comic book heroes and I was able to introduce them to Dan Jurgens, the man who killed Superman...   Adventures of Superman 500 Modern 9.2 When this comic book came out I was working the night shift and trying to support my family. My oldest child was now a fan of Superman too and at six years old was watching Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman with me. She was my little buddy when she was growing up and was still quite star struck when we went to a comic con to meet Dean Cain....so much so that as we got in line to meet him she got so nervous that she left the line. By this time she had begun her own brand new family and had her baby girl with her that day. She put my baby Granddaughter in the stroller and began to circle Dean Cain's table using the stroller to give her a reason to walk by. My wife and I thought she looked like a shark circling her prey and we laughed as we watched her come close only to swim away again. Ironicly, when we got done talking with Dean we joined our daughter and went to sit down to feed the baby a bottle. As we were sitting there, who should walk up to admire the baby but Dean Cain. The look on my Daughters face was priceless! They talked for a bit and after Dean left she realized that for a Kryptonian he was pretty down to earth. Later that day she even had her picture taken with him. That day he cemented himself in our hearts as a wonderful and very real Superman. Superman had indeed come back to life both in Adventures of Superman #500 and in our hearts when years later we got to met the real Superman himself. View Comic
X-Men and Captain Universe: Sleeping Giants 1 Modern 9.2 I always wanted to be a hero...a REAL one. From the 1st time I read a comic book and came to understand that real heroes care about the welfare and well being of more than just those they hold dear and that the term "neighbors" is a whole world experience. In my life I have done what I could to live what I believe. From wearing my United States Army Uniform as a Chaplain's Assistant to wearing my MercyOne Hospital Kitchen uniform to feed those who needed compassion and kindness. I have found my place...Being Captain Universe in this Comic book is the icing on the cake. I smile every time I look at it. View Comic
