This is the book that started the conversation with the owner of the 'NO ONE CAN KILL SUPERMAN!' collection. Regardless of any books I added to my collection I am most grateful for meeting an awesome fellow collector.
There are some really hard to find books in this set but I managed to locate either raw or graded copies of all of them except this one. It seemed like this book was going to be impossible to find. I really enjoy the one-shots and books outside the regular Superman titles from this set. It just feels kind of cool to have these books, and it’s even better to include the later printings. I had asked the CGC forums for help with raw copies of this book but had no luck. I had been checking eBay at least daily with no luck. There were plenty of first printings, but no second. There was one 9.8 second printing in the census and it was in the 'NO ONE CAN KILL SUPERMAN!' collection/set.
One particular night I stayed up until 4:00 AM digging deep into internet search results looking for this book. I ended up finding a site that had 23 first printings and one second printing listed for sale from different sellers. It even had thumbnails so I could see that this was indeed the second printing. It was only $4.00 and I wasted no time ordering it!
After I placed the order, I received a very nice email from the seller telling me how he collected all of these books when they came out and had immediately bagged and boarded them. He talked about how perfect the book I was getting is. I was thinking that my hard work had finally paid off! I waited all week to receive the book, feeling very happy to have found what may be the very last Legacy of Superman second printing out there, and it sounded like it had a shot at 9.8. When the book arrived I was devastated to carefully open the package, anticipating seeing the white and red Superman title, only to see the first printing! It ended up that the seller used some type of auto-populate feature to load his books to the site and it had loaded the wrong book. Ouch!
Fast forward...
I feel so fortunate to have finally been able to add this book to my collection thanks to the 'NO ONE CAN KILL SUPERMAN!' collection and promise to be a good steward for all of these books. The second image is of both printings together at last! I got this book reholdered in September 2020 but left the old holder in the second picture to remember what they looked like when first united. Comparing the two photos, it is incredible to see how much better books present in the new holder! I also added a Signature Series copy of the first printing to my collection in June 2021.
I continue to occasionally look for another copy of this second printing and have not yet seen one! I really wonder what happened to all of them!?
Update - My friend onlyweaknesskryptonite added the second and third 9.8's of this book to the census in August 2021... LUCKY!
