Owner's Description
Issue #34 features what looks like an AquaHulk on the cover-sorry, mixing publishers there. In “Aquabeast the Abominable", a playboy millionaire, Peter Dudley, hires scientist Dr. Hans Ludorf to turn him into a duplicate of Aquaman to hopefully win Mira’s heart. Unfortunately, the process goes awry, and Dudley is turned into a hulking, super-powerful, distorted version of Aquaman, who calls himself "Aquabeast". Aquabeast invades Atlantis, defeats Aquaman in battle, and abducts Mera. But the villain runs afoul of Hammuri, an alien invader on the ocean floor, who does battle with him to keep him from harming Mera. Both Aquabeast and Hammuri fall into a crushing whirlpool and do not emerge, while Mera is reunited with Aquaman.
Our 9.8 comes from the Boston Collection. Named for the city from which Bechara Maalouf hails, he unveiled a box of very high grade Silver Age books at a New York show in the '90s. An older couple began coming to the same show with similar boxes, who dealers realized was the source of Bechara's find. Mainly consisting of comics from 1964 to 1975, the Boston collection contained many duplicates, but did not exhibit any identifiable markings on the covers. Of note, the Fantastic Four #55 graded CGC 9.9, one of the few 9.9 grades assigned to a Silver Age comic book comes from the Boston Collection.
Our book is currently tied with two others for highest graded. We acquired it off the CL Exchange on 7/13/2019.*
