Owner's Description
Murder Incorporated #8 is referenced in Fredric Wertham’s “Seduction of the Innocent” (SOTI) in the text on page 160.
In this section of the SOTI, Wertham describes how crime comics contribute to juvenile delinquency. With regards to Murder Incorporated #8, Wertham takes issue with a panel from the story “The Whyos”. This story recounts the exploits of a notorious street gang called the Whyos that terrorized New York in the period after the civil war. One of their leaders, Danny Lyons, was known to carry a for hire price list for criminal services that he would perform on behalf of clients. On page 160 of the SOTI, Wertham cites this story, and the associated price list, as an example of the deleterious lessons that crime comics teach children.
The Whyos story was originally printed in Murder Incorporated #8 and reprinted in Martin Kane #4. However, it’s unclear what book Wertham was referring to on page 160 so both Murder Incorporated #8 and Martin Kane #4 are considered SOTI comics.
