Issue #52 is a major Marvel key like Issue #48, in that it features the first appearance of the Black Panther (T'Challa). The Inhumans also make an appearance in this issue. Our 9.8 comes from the Pacific Coast Collection, which is generally considered to be the greatest Silver Age collection to ever surface. It was brought to market by Robert Roter after he discovered portions of it for sale on eBay in 1999. The books were marketed through PCE over the next several years and contained over 7,000 comics and magazines that included Marvel, DC, and Gold Key among others, covering a time span between 1961 and 1977. Many of the highest graded Marvel and DC issues from the early '60s hail from this collection with exceptional page quality. The books do not exhibit any distinguishing markings. This book got very expensive with the announcement of the movie, with 9.8s peaking close to $100,000, but has since been coming down in value. Who knows where it goes with another Black Panther movie on its way, although the unexpected death of Chadwick Boseman may affect that franchise. My guess is that this book may have seen its highs. We acquired this book from Pedigree Comics.
2024 Update: Currently, our book is tied with five other copies for highest graded in the census. I have not seen any recent sales of a 9.8, although a couple of 9.6s have sold at $30k and $36k the last two years. I think it is fair to say that the sequel to the Black Panther was generally regarded as a flop, maybe they should have replaced Chadwick. BTW, he was actually my neighbor in Atlanta-the adjoining townhouse-while he was filming the Avengers films. He was rarely there, but when he was he generally had an entourage and they were loud. It’s really a shame we lost a talent like his too soon,
