On this Jack Kirby cover, Thor is the only hero standing in between Earth and an invasion force. This early Thor issue from 1966 introduces the Rigelians, also known as the Colonizers. Our WP 9.8 is one of only five at CGC's highest certified grade for the issue. We acquired the book in the 8/31/2023 CL Auction. It was one of those situations where there was apparently only one person buying Thors and this was the only book I needed so I threw in a high bid and got stuck very near my max, while every other Thor 9.8 in the auction went for a fraction of what I paid for this one. Reviewing the bidding history, the price quadruped right at the close, but there were only two bids, so if I had not been bidding-or if he has not- one of us would have gotten the book for 25% of what I ended up paying, which is one reason I hate CL Auctions.
It goes without saying that I do kinda regret the buy, but now I just have five books to go to complete this set in 9.6/9.8. Even still, I won’t be that crazy the next time a book I need to finish this set appears on the market.
