Owner's Description
Frontline Combat #4 is referenced in Fredric Wertham’s “Seduction of the Innocent” (SOTI) on page 257. In this section of the SOTI Wertham is describing examples of how comic book publishers use misdirection and trickery to conceal their names when publishing comics with objectionable material. As proof, he cites examples such as a single publisher using different names to publish multiple comic titles or publishers using confusing numbering systems to misdirect attention from objectionable titles. In the case of Frontline Combat #4, Wertham states:
“Sometimes the publisher’s name on the comic book and the name and contents of the book show a ludicrous discrepancy. For instance, one of the 1952 crop has on its first page a horrible picture of a man shot in the stomach, with a face of agonized pain, and such dialogue as: You know as well as I do that any water he’d drink’d pour right out of his gut! It’d be murder! The name of the publisher is: Tiny Tots Comics, Inc.”
Clearly, Wertham is using Frontline Combat #4 as an example of EC Comics using a pseudo-name to publish objectionable material. Furthermore, the use of the name Tiny Tots is a cruel irony, from Wertham’s perspective, to publish such graphic content. I have included a scan of the first page of Frontline Combat #4 for additional reference.
