Jeff Smith story, cover, and art
Synopsis
Another rat creature ambush...another bail out from the Great Red Dragon...and Gran'ma Ben ain't happy. This image became the cover for the second black and white printing of the Eyes of the Storm TPB. The art by Jeff in this issue is legendary and the same goes for the narrative.
The Slab
One of the highest graded Signature Series copies with a sketch of Ted the Bug (unacknowledged on label)! I really love the use of a blue paint pen for the signature. Bought from the Jolly Comics collection via ComicLink. Jeff signed this at the 2011 Baltimore Comic-Con and it was graded on November 7, 2011. I do not know who the facilitator was.
Inside The Comic
Twenty pages of story, three pages of letters and one page for an ad. The inside front cover has a drawing of Thorn and Fone reacting to a lightning strike from page 7. The brief prologue is included as well as the credits: By Jeff Smith at the top and Cover Airbrush by David Reed on the bottom. The back cover has a panel from page 8 showing Thorn and Fone staring into the darkness where Gran’ma Ben disappeared.
Bone-a-Fides
The Bone-a-Fides section is all fan commentary and adulation. There’s a reference to Palmer’s Picks in Wizard magazine as inspiration for buying Bone and the first praise for David Reed’s airbrushed colors on the covers. The first card series was mentioned and Jeff said that a second series will be out shortly. Letters from the Philippines and Denmark were included and people continued to mention reading the books to kids and sharing the stories with their wives. One fan asked about a possible animated series and Jeff said he’s been getting “some interesting propositions” but no plans yet.
The bolded commentary at the end of the letters was longer than normal as Jeff apologized to his fans for not keeping up with their letter writing. He said that they received all sorts of material such as full color doodles & sketches and even photocopies of upcoming indie comics. He also noted that the ninth printing of Bone #1 had recently been released but they forgot to put “9th Printing” in the indicia. Some people were trying to sell it as the first print but he was doing his best to get the word out. He & Vijaya were finally settled back in Ohio and announced that they would attend the Mid-Ohio Comic Con in late November 1994 (with Bone Flip Books for sale).
Ads
The ad on the last page has various Bone t-shirts and pins while the inside back cover has an ad for the two Bone TPBs (subscriptions and back issues can also be ordered).
