Jeff Smith story, cover, and art
Synopsis
The Lucius-Phoney bar bet gets interesting when Phoney reveals his knowledge of dragons while Gran'ma Ben receives news concerning large troop movements in the southern part of the valley. She decides to leave her farm with Thorn & Fone Bone tagging along and pulls out her old sword & shield from a chest hidden in the barn…just in case.
The Slab
Highest grade Signature Series book! My raw book signed by Jeff at a Chicago Comics appearance in 2013. Officially graded by CGC on November 19, 2013. Thanks to mschmidt for facilitating!
Inside The Comic
Twenty pages of story, two pages of letters and two pages of ads. The inside front cover has a drawing of Phoney looking duplicitous from page 5. The brief prologue is included as well as the credits: By Jeff Smith at the top and Cover Airbrush by David Reed on the bottom. The back cover has a panel from page 19 showing Fone Bone asking Gran’ma if they’re just gonna leave. She answers in the affirmative.
Bone-a-Fides
The Bone-a-Fides section is 100% fans. Like last issue, Jeff included a creative critique from a reader who complained about the queen & princess revelation for Gran’ma Ben & Thorn. Jeff took it in stride and admitted that he was fearful that it might seem trite and cliche but, in the end, he’s a “softy for fairy tales!” Thank God for that! The other letters also focused on the storytelling but from the artistic side. Specifically, the atmospheric effects in #15 and #16 with the thunder and lightning as well as the drawing of Gran’ma Ben with the visage of Rose pointing at Fone and Thorn. One guy even asked why everyone called “your little white dude” Fone Bone instead of just Fone. Jeff replied: “They call him Fone Bone for the same reason the Peanuts gang calls Charlie Brown, Charlie Brown! In other words, I have no idea.”
Ads
The first ad page is for a hardcover of Bone Volume One: Out from Boneville which is the first time this subtitle is mentioned. The last page has six different Bone t-shirts, nine different pins, a Bone cap, and the autographed pin set with all three cousins. The inside back cover has an ad for both Bone TPBs as well as information about buying a subscription and back issues.

Uncut Sheet of Bone Series 1 Promo Cards
Honestly, I don’t remember where I got this or how they were given out. I know the Thorn card would become a promo card for the series and is taken from the cover of #5. None of these cards showed up in the actual set since the set itself was geared more towards telling the story of the first ten issues than showing single characters with bios. The sheet may have been given out at the 1994 San Diego Comic-Con but this is just a guess. There’s a few on eBay that are signed with the “94” as well so they’re certainly not rare. It was interesting to see some of the panels in color back in 1994, that’s for sure. The airbrushes by David Reed were very well done.
