Jeff Smith story, cover, and art.
Synopsis
Phoney and Smiley steal an ox cart which helps the others penetrate the Atheian gate incognito (including Bartleby who hides in the hay). On the rooftops hidden from sight, they meet a Great Dreaming Master. This is the first chapter of the Treasure Hunters story arc.
The Slab
Highest graded Signature Series book! My raw comic signed by Jeff at the 2014 Emerald City Comic-Con. Thanks to dscott for facilitating! It was officially graded by CGC on March 29, 2014.
Inside The Comic
Twenty pages of story, two pages of letters, and two pages of ads. The inside front cover has a drawing of Lucius, Wendell, and other villagers from page 12 with the black & white “coloring” reversed. The brief prologue is on the top left and the credits are as follows: Written and Drawn by Jeff Smith, Cover Color by Steve Hamaker. For Cartoon Books: Vijaya Iyer as Publisher, Kathleen Glosan as Production Manager, Steve Hamaker as Product Designer and Kevin Spain for Shipping and Archiving. The back cover has a panel from page 16 with Phoney explaining gold coins to Smiley and Fone.
Bone-a-Fides
The Bone-a-Fides are finally back! Most of the letters were about #42 with high praise for the skirmish with the Veni-Yan monks and the spooky ghost circles. A couple messages were from fairly new readers who had picked up a recent issue and then gorged all the chapters before it. One such fan took a shot at Olav for saying nothing ever happens. She kindly told Jeff to ignore him.
And then whose next letter should appear? Mr. Olav Beemer, of course, with his eighth entry! He was the only one who spoke about #43 and also noticed that the cover was from a scene not in the issue (praised it nonetheless). To his credit, he did give kudos to the “road trip” aspect of the story and says that he loves all of the foreshadowing. He senses something big is coming and can’t wait to see what happens.
A fan from Norway wrote in to say that he’s looking forward to Jeff’s appearance at the Raptus Festival, which is the only comic convention in Norway (at the time at least). Jeff included one industry letter from Mike Kunkel (known for Herobear and the Kid) saying that he loved the art and the “poses are superb”. His brother went to the San Diego Comic-Con years ago and got the Bone Collection signed for him. He had always been impressed that he took the time to chat and provide a quick Fone Bone sketch as well.
Ads
The first ad was for Bone Volume 7: Ghost Circles with various quotes of praise surrounding the cover image (from Bone #40). The second was for Rose #3 which would ship in November 2001. It showed most of page 2 with the bottom right panel replaced by the cover for #3. The inside back cover had a color ad for Phoney’s Big Bone Hunt which would feature six different PVC figures from the Bone saga (Fone Bone, Smiley, Phoney, Lucius, a Rat Creature, and the Super-Rare Stickeater).

2020 SDCC Bone Mask by Jeff Smith and a Bone Pen
COVID!!! Who doesn’t look back at the pandemic with fond memories? To assist with the endless hours of useless isolation, Jeff and the CB crew did a virtual sale & signing on their Facebook page for the 2020 San Diego Comic-Con. For the first 50 customers, Jeff drew these masks which were hilarious. No, I’ve never worn it, but I love it just the same ;-)
I got the pen from colorist and former Cartoon Books administrator Tom Gaadt. He included it with some color work he did for me on a piece of Jeff Smith original artwork. I’ve seen Jeff sign books with these things but this is the first time I’ve ever owned one. Big thanks to Tom!
