Jeff Smith story, cover, and art
Synopsis
Lucius continues to lead the Old Man's Cave refugees through the ghost circles while The Hooded One "changes" her Pawan allies' leadership. The cover image became the cover for the original black and white printing of the Treasure Hunters TPB. The story contained in this comic is the 8-page prologue and a 10-page chapter on pages 45-54 in the same TPB. It’s also the only issue of the series without a single drawing of any of the Bone cousins. Except for the cover of course, which is more of a preview for the next issue.
The Slab
Tied for the highest graded Signature Series book! My raw book signed by Jeff at the 2014 Heroes Con. Unfortunately it was signed in black but what can you do? I requested silver but I think my instructions got lost somewhere in the process. My facilitator dscott made it up to me so I appreciate his services. Graded by CGC on August 11, 2014.
Inside The Comic
Eighteen pages of story, two pages of letters, and four pages of ads. The inside front cover has a drawing of two Pawan generals from page 12 with the black & white “coloring” reversed. The brief prologue is on the top left and the credits are as follows: Written and Drawn by Jeff Smith, Cover Color by Steve Hamaker. For Cartoon Books: Vijaya Iyer as Publisher and Kathleen Glosan as Production Manager. The back cover has a panel from page 2 with Wendell explaining his side of the Lucius “scandal”.
Bone-a-Fides
Jeff says that #46 triggered a lot of letters from the community and it looks like the references to Kathmandu was one of the inspirations. A fan who frequently visits Nepal wrote in to say that he admired the design of Atheia and hoped to revisit the area despite the Maoist uprisings that were occurring at the time. Jeff revealed he wanted to put a twist on reader’s expectations for European castles and thought the Kathmandu style was perfect. Even Paul Dale Roberts, who’s giving Olav Beemer a run for his money with his 5th published letter, loved the “vacation” pics of Kathmandu in #46 and applauded Jeff’s research.
After another letter requesting his original artwork, Jeff said that he had plans for it and was keeping it all together until it was finished. Up until this point, he had yet to spell out his intentions for the 1000+ pages of work in the Bone-a-Fides and this was the first hint at where they’d eventually go (SPOILER ALERT: The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum).
Jeff acknowledged the fact that the Bones were completely left out of this issue (save for the cover). He promised that Smiley’s minting of coins and Phoney tossing them around like Scrooge McDuck would appear in #48!
Ads
The first ad is for something non-Bone related, which hadn’t happened in a while. The top half is for a comic called Opposite Forces by Tom Bancroft and the bottom half is Hubie by Greg Hardin (Funny Pages Press published both). The second and third are the same ads as last issue for Phoney’s Big Bone Hunt and the seven collected editions of Bone chapters. The final ad page is exclusively for Ghost Circles while the inside back cover has the same colored Rose ad as #46 for the collected edition.
