Owner's Description
Crime Can’t Win #10 is referenced in Fredric Wertham’s “Seduction of the Innocent” (SOTI) on page 161. Wertham begins this section of the book by describing the intensifying violence of young people in society. He identifies comics as a key contributing cause of this increasing violence and provides a series of examples of crime comic stories that teach children how to commit crimes and fight authority.
In the case of Crime Can’t Win #10, Wertham cites the following: “Stealing of automobiles has become a great nuisance. Any young boy who succumbs to temptation in this direction, although he may have been brought up not to do it, has seen in detail just how to go about it. Comic books describe it often and fully, from incidental thefts to the “hot-car racket.”
Wertham’s use of the term “hot-car racket” is taken directly from the cover of Crime Can’t Win #10. In addition to the cover scan, I have included a scan of the first page of the “Hot Car!” story from this comic.
