Owner's Description

Literally, a few seconds earlier, I had just upgraded my copy of B&B#66 after over 5 years of waiting. With this issue, it took me even longer as I had won my CGC 9.6 copy in the October 2015 Comiclink auction – a copy which was tied with 15 others for second highest on the CGC Census. That CGC 9.6 copy had been one of my earlier purchases in the run. By 2015, I had a good portion of my JLA run completed and I was getting a little restless - there were fewer and fewer opportunities for me to improve/add to my JLA run, so I thought I would look into another title.

Because the registry set for the complete JLA run also included Brave and the Bold #28-30, I had already obtained three very key parts of the B&B run. So, I figured of any title, it made sense to collect this one. If I had ever had a Showcase #4, I would've used that same logic to go after a Showcase run.

So, I was starting to collect B&B's as of 2015. It was still a secondary priority for me, though, as JLA's were still #1 for me and I would put my dollars there first rather than with B&B's. This would mean that a number of the B&B issues that came to auction would go by me. With this particular issue, the next year a 9.8 came to auction and I only put in a half-hearted bid on it. So, in April 2021, another 9.8 had my attention. As it turns out, it had the attention of a couple other people too...and my bid of $2,100 was outbid twice in the last ten seconds and it went to some other deserving home for the grand price of $3,211. Oh well, a 9.8 of B&B#73 was due in less than a minute, and I was leading on that book with a much higher reserve bid, so getting one of the two wouldn't be all that bad...uh oh...what's that saying about chickens and hatching?

Update: June 2021 - The Heritage auction had the Pacific Coast 9.6 up for grabs, but like with #71, I already had a book in that grade. While it would've been nice to get a pedigree copy (and I placed a half hearted bid on it), the PC copy went for $1,400 plus BP which was much higher than I was considering due to there being two 9.8's on the census.
Fast forward to August 2021. Not only does the other 9.8 come to the Heritage auction, it is the Pacific Coast 9.8 pedigree copy (not the same as the PC 9.6 copy – there was no resub/upgrade scenario here). I win the book (my fifth B&B win of the day thus far) and do so with a winning bid that was less than the other 9.8 which went in the April 2021 Comiclink auction. I couldn’t believe I picked up this Pacific Coast copy for less money!!! (That kind of thing almost NEVER happens to me!).
So, long story long, I now own a copy which is tied for HIGHEST GRADED on the CGC census (with one other book).
But it’s a Pacific Coast pedigree…did I mention that? ?
