Owner's Description

Daredevil faces off against the Gladiator, Melvin Potter, for the first time in Issue #18. 9.8s of this issue are plentiful, but for some reason, they seem to still always be expensive. We acquired ours in the 8/30/2021 ComicConnect Auction.

It was, quite frankly, a very unusual auction. We put in our maximum bid of early, when the book was at a low level. But someone quickly drove the bidding up to our maximum with at least a week to go in the auction. I told a friend and fellow DD collector that I was out, so if he wanted it he would not be competing against me. I never expected the bid to hold up for over a week. Honestly, I had mixed emotions about winning it, as I spent the money I allotted for the auction elsewhere figuring I would not get it. And I was fine with that outcome since there are five other 9.8s in the census. Relatively speaking, in my mind it should be at most about $1,000 less than I paid. So this is one time, there have been many, where I definitely feel I overpaid.

I would always prefer to buy and sell books privately, when possible. With experienced collectors who are not too greedy, we generally can find a fair price and avoid the costs, time delays and vicissitudes of an auction. In most cases, I feel the prices I realize or pay are slightly higher than auction prices. In fact, in some cases, I have made a generous offer to a seller who refuses it and sends the book to auction and I pick it up at a fraction of what I offered. But still, I prefer the certainty of knowing a price. This is an example of an auction buy I regretted, as I feel Daredevils are a little overpriced currently. They certainly aren’t ASMs or FFs where there are numerous collectors.

I vary my auction strategy, sometimes I bid my max early, sometimes I wait until the auction is closing to bid. If I place more than a token bid early, it’s generally because I won’t be around for the live auction or I am somewhat indifferent to whether I win the book. The latter was the case here, 9.8s are common enough that I figured another would appear. Oh well, whatever….
