___________________________________________________________

Published in August of 1964, Daredevil #3 not only features Daredevil’s 3rd appearance in the history of comics, but also features the 1st issue within the run in which an original Daredevil villain was introduced! As noted on the front cover: MARVEL’S NEWEST SENSATION IS TRAPPED BY…THE OWL, OVERLORD OF CRIME!

The classic Jack Kirby cover depicts Mr. Leland Owlsley sitting on his owl-themed throne in his gangster attire, while pulling back a mechanical lever, which opens a large hollow section of the tile flooring in a clever attempt to capture Daredevil!

Still featured in his original yellow and black suit, Daredevil is leaping across the page to not only avoid the unexpected pitfall from the trap flooring, but from the attack of two of the Owl’s henchmen, with one of them pointing a pistol at him!

Kirby’s attention to detail is superb! Behind the Owl’s boss throne, he drew a silhouette of an owl’s body and detailed the back of his throne to resemble an owl’s big and powerful eyes! At first glance, one might not see this, which creates a slight optical illusion to play off the villain’s deceitful nature!

In addition, do you think that the Owl’s hairstyle could have been the prototype to Wolverine’s famous hairdo, which would occur more than 10 years later? It is certainly remarkably similar looking and might be a topic worth exploring further!

Moreover, the Owl (Leland Owlsley) was portrayed on the silver screen by actor Bob Gunton in the critically acclaimed Marvel Daredevil Streaming Series (2015-2018)!

In closing, I purchased this PERFECTLY WRAPPED & CENTERED pristine copy from Mr. Vincent Zurzolo of Metropolis Collectibles / Comic Connect in August of 2021! I am super proud to own this stunning copy and look forward to watching it appreciate each year!

Happy Collecting & Enjoy the Hunt!
