Owner's Description
Signed by Al Migrom on November 14th of 2010.
This is the single issue of What If that was published between the end of Vol 1 What If #47 in October of 1984 and the beginning of What If Vol 2 in July of 1989. What If Special #1 was published in June of 1988.
Story begins with Stark entombed in his armor with Professor Yinsen assisting to give the suit some life. The Watcher narrates and discusses an alternate reality where Ironman becomes a traitor. The reality diverges from main continuity when Wong Chu breaks in and stops Stark from activating his armor. Wong Chu steals the helmet and encases Tony Stark in cement. Chu gets a command from his boss Chen Lu to give up Stark and armor so he obeys.
Chen Lu enslaves Tony by threatening to deactivate his armor and thus the protection for his heart condition. He then allows Stark to travel back to the US, but not before torturing him. Nick Fury confronts Tony Stark back at home and says he doesn't trust him. Tony Stark showcases the Ironman armor and a group of superheroes agree to allow him to join their ranks, but the Avengers do not officially form. Nick Fury retains his feelings of distrust.
Tony reluctantly gives Chen Lu intel that Nick Fury will be named director of SHIELD. Hydra attempts to assassinate Fury but they fail. Reed Richards detects transmissions to the Stark armor and believes Fury's suspicions. Lu commands Tony to kill Reed and after more torture, Tony agrees. He breaks into the Baxter building and attacks Mr. Fantastic, but passes a message about his enslavement and heart condition. Together they outsmart the Chen Lu and Tony is freed. The armor is repurposed to exact revenge...
