Brief Description:
Forge is in the Kuwaiti desert, sifting through the remains of what is believed to be Asteroid M. The question remains: how come it is still largely intact. Forge comes to the conclusion that something, or someone, must have guided it back to Earth. Inside, the statuesque figures of three dead Acolytes face the broken armor of their lord, Magneto. Charles Xavier, meanwhile, enters into a live television debate with Senator Robert Kelly and the leader of the Friends of Humanity, Graydon Creed. Each provides their own arguments for and against human/mutant co-existence. Creed is clearly willing to fight for human rights, while Kelly finds himself agreeing with much that Charles has to say. Hank McCoy is brought into the debate and takes every opportunity to ridicule Creed, much to the amusement of his fellow X-Men watching the show at Harry’s Hideaway. Bishop finds a waitress working there a little suspicious. Also watching the show are the Upstarts of which Creed is a member. The Gamesmaster tells them that a new mutant that Fitzroy is molding for membership will be the last entrant to their game. Back at Xavier’s mansion, Illyana is feeling poorly and has developed a cough. Piotr promises he will always be there for her.

Story Notes:
Asteroid M was seemingly destroyed in X-Men (2nd series) #3.

The slaughter Forge mentions was carried out in X-Men (1st series) #298.

Stryfe attempted to murder Professor Xavier in Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #294 during the X-Cutioner’s Song storyline.

Senator Kelly’s aide, though unnamed, is actually Noah DuBois in his first appearance.

This is also the first appearance of Graydon Creed, who was later revealed to be the son of Sabretooth and Mystique. He is the leader of the Friends of Humanity.

Shinobi Shaw seemingly killed his father Sebastian in X-Force #62, though he later reappeared alive and well.

Piotr Rasputin’s brother, Mikhail, also later reappeared alive and well. Illyana’s cough is an early sign that she has the Legacy Virus, just like Gordon Leffert’s cough was in X-Force #18.

The mutant Fitzroy is molding for membership of the Upstarts is Siena Blaze.

The waitress at Harry’s Hideaway, Pamela Greenwood was later revealed to be Fatale in X-Men (2nd series) #49. This is her first appearance.
