Brief Description of issue 57
In her apartment in Manhattan, Lorna Dane is attacked by two Sentinel robots. Meanwhile, in Egypt, Alex Summers is terrified by his newly-manifested, uncontrollable mutant powers. He pleads with the X-Men to stay away from him. Three local policemen arrive to enquire of the situation. They are surprised to see that the man the X-Men accuse as a criminal – the Living Pharaoh – is, in fact, Professor Abdol, a distinguished Egyptian archaeologist. They begin suspecting the X-Men as criminals instead. Distressed, Alex again proves unable to control his powers and lashes out at the officers. In the ensuing fight, Cyclops manages to take them all out and the team flees, now looking for Alex, who’s apparently run off in the desert. Their search for the next few hours proves futile, until the X-Men decide to communicate with Lorna and ask her to track down Alex through Cerebro. However, through their monitor connection, they discover Lorna’s apartment is trashed and she’s missing. Dead worried, Iceman takes Beast with him and departs for New York with the X-Men’s crate. The others stay in Egypt to continue searching for Alex – unaware that he’s also attacked in the desert by a Sentinel unit. A few hours later, Beast and Iceman investigate Lorna’s apartment, only to be greeted by two policemen who want to place them under arrest. The two mutants flee custody and hide in an apartment Cyclops keeps nearby. While there, they watch a talk show on the TV. One of the speakers reveals himself as Larry Trask, the son of the deceased mutant-hater Bolivar Trask. Much to their horror, Larry rants and raves about the mutant threat and heralds the return of the Sentinels!

Brief Description of issue 58
In Cyclops’ apartment in New York, Beast and Iceman are attacked by a Sentinel unit. Iceman deliberately distracts the Sentinel long enough to allow Hank to escape the apartment and continue the search for the missing Lorna Dane. Beast later contacts Cyclops, Angel and Marvel Girl, who are still in Egypt, and briefs them on the latest developments. Instead of following Scott and Jean on a plane back home, Angel stubbornly insists on flying with his own wings back to the States. However, his transatlantic flight is cut short when he is captured mid-flight by Sentinels. At the States, Iceman is taken captive in Larry Trask’s secret base, where he also encounters Alex and Lorna. Alex, who has been given the codename “Havok” by Trask, has been made to wear a costume which helps him control his powers, but also places him under Trask’s control. Trask expands on his ambitious plan to capture every mutant on Earth and three more mutants – Living Monolith, Mesmero and Banshee – are soon detained by the Sentinels and delivered to his base. Judge Chalmers visits Larry’s base to appraise their ongoing mutant-hunting project. Impressed with Larry’s achievements, Chalmers nevertheless disapproves of his inhumane methods, unconvinced of the necessity to treat all mutants as menace. Things take an unexpected turn when Larry snaps and orders the Sentinels to execute all mutants in the vicinity. Wishing to prove a point to him, Chalmers removes a medallion from Larry’s neck, which Larry’s father once made him promise never to take off. Suddenly, the Sentinels no longer obey to Larry’s commands and instead prepare to execute him. Their reason for this: Larry Trask is a mutant!

Brief Description of Issue 59
Having identified Larry Trask as a mutant, the Sentinels seize him and intend to execute him, as well as other mutants in the vicinity. For the moment, though, they simply put Larry in suspended animation, much like they did with the other mutant captives. Meanwhile, Cyclops, Marvel Girl and Beast infiltrate Trask’s base. Inside, they happen upon a Sentinel ship that has just returned with three new captives: Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch and Toad. The three X-Men free the captives and masquerade as them, reasoning that the Sentinels will mistake them for the three other mutants and adapt their attacks accordingly, to the advantage of the X-Men. After a series of battles, only Cyclops manages to infiltrate the control room, where he is attacked by Number Two, the leading unit. Judge Chalmers, horrified with the Sentinels’ actions, intervenes and is caught in a blast meant for Cyclops. Distressed over having inadvertently harmed a human, the Sentinels reassess their priorities and tend to Chalmers. Finally, appealing to their logic, Cyclops argues that all humanity is the result of a mutation – thus, the Sentinels ought to find a way to eradicate this source. His bluff works: convinced, the Sentinels fly into the heart of the sun, pinpointing this as the source of mutant-inducing radiation. In the aftermath of this ordeal, Havok is badly hurt as a result of his own powers. Wishing to get a doctor for him, Cyclops calls Dr. Lykos, an old colleague of Professor X, unaware of the new troubles into which he’s getting the X-Men.
