Owner's Description

From the 'NO ONE CAN KILL SUPERMAN!' collection.

I had previously submitted one of these but it came back a 9.6, even more disappointing was that it had off-white to white pages. I’ve mentioned before that I have more of an issue with page quality than grade sometimes, particularly with modern books. I was then able to find another raw copy that I thought had a good chance at 9.8, and I intended on sending that in with my next submission. Needless to say, I was really happy to be able to get this book along with all of the others from the 'NO ONE CAN KILL SUPERMAN!' collection and upgrade this slot from 9.6 to 9.8 and also get rid of those off-white to white pages.

I really can’t overstate how much time and energy, but not necessarily money... (that's meant in jest as I think I got these for a very fair price) being able to get these books all at once saved me! I reholdered this book in September 2020.

This is the lone 9.8 in the census as of this writing.

Update #1 - In June 2022 the other potential 9.8 copy of this book that I mentioned above became the second 9.8 to enter the census! I had added the books from the 'NO ONE CAN KILL SUPERMAN!' collection in December 2019. I mentioned above, and in my set description then, how much time I think they saved me... in the case of this book, it literally took two and a half years before a second 9.8 existed at all, and that was from me putting in the effort to submit it myself!

The grade date of the first 9.8 is 25 March 2014 and the grade date of the second 9.8 is 9 June 2022... that's 2999 days... or 8 years, 2 months, 16 days... or 98 months, 16 days from the creation of the first 9.8 to the second 9.8... yikes! There were 26 total graded in the census when the second 9.8 was added so it wasn't for lack of anyone trying.

I show a picture of both 9.8's in the second picture slot.

Oddly or coincidentally... when I was checking to see if the census had updated a couple days after receiving the grade for the second 9.8 it had jumped from 1 to 3 9.8's! This timing seems too strange, but strange things have happened before such as the first two 9.8 copies of Superman: The Man of Steel 20 second printing being submitted by two different people and being graded just one day apart (see that slot for details). This jump also could have been a clerical error... adding to the clerical error theory is that my friend Brandon Shepherd noticed that the Key Comments were incorrect for this issue for just a short time, ‘holo-grafx foil cover’ was briefly included in the census Key Comments but then removed/corrected by the same afternoon that it jumped from 1 to 3 9.8’s (we have screen shots of this weirdness)! So, who knows what was going on?! I guess we may find out if/when the possibly second/third 9.8 pops up for sale somewhere... until then I'm sticking with the story that I submitted the second 9.8 to enter the census... it's more interesting!

Uptade #2 - In late August 2022 a fellow collector in the UK, PaulioScorchio reached out through the Registry to help clear up the number of Adventures of Superman 505 in CGC 9.8 question. He had read through my set and saw my comments about this book. He explained that he bought a 9.8 505 Collectors Edition… when he received it he noticed it was labeled incorrectly and also showed in the census as a Regular Edition! This was the extra book I hypothesized about above! He has since had it relabeled and the extra 9.8 has been removed from the census… so cool for him to reach out and let me know this!

Now, having said that, there are still three 9.8’s. After getting the grade on my second 9.8 in June 2022 (and seeing the census jump to three 9.8's), I had noticed that later, and for just a short time, there were actually FOUR 9.8’s in the census. PaulioScorchio had one of those, which was mislabeled and eventually removed, leaving THREE. How am I sure? Brandon Shepherd had seen the third 9.8 for sale but he passed because he did not like the cover alignment of that copy… that confirms the existence of the third.

I have said before that this set has taken me places that I otherwise wouldn't have went, and allowed me to meet people and make friends I otherwise wouldn't have. It is really cool that I have now met another pretty cool person, this time in the UK, through just this one book in this set! The time documenting the search for these books has paid off in ways that really matter once again!
