Brief Description:
Mystique fights X-Men robots in Arcade’s Murderworld, “killing” them all – including her foster daughter Rogue – but finding herself unable to harm Nightcrawler, who then beats her. Afterwards, she discusses with Arcade that she wants the rest of her train to train as well, as she is on a quest to get Rogue back from the X-Men. When Destiny wants to talk about Nightcrawler, Mystique refuses. Elsewhere, Kitty Pryde and Storm talk about their estrangement with each other to Stevie Hunter, while Xavier, Havok and Cyclops bid farewell to the Starjammers. Later, Kitty, Colossus, Nightcrawler and Amanda Sefton attend concert in Manhattan. While the younger two X-Men park the car, Nightcrawler discusses his roots with Amanda, revealing his similarity to Mystique and wishing to talk to his foster mother, Margali, about it. When Kitty and Colossus see a building burning, Colossus tells Kitty to call for help while he runs upstairs to help any trapped people. Instead however, it turns out to be a trap by the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. With a carefully planned attack, they mange to freeze Colossus with liquid nitrogen.

Story Notes:
Kitty and Storm’s estrangement stems from Storm’s radical change in Uncanny X-Men #173. The plot is resolved in issue #180.

Kitty’s friend Doug Ramsey was introduced in New Mutants (1st series) #13.

Mystique hinted that there was more to her similarity to Nightcrawler than mere chance in issue #142. The subplot about their link which seems to start here strangely isn’t continued. Apparently, Chris Claremont had planned to reveal that Mystique was Nightcrawler’s father (and Destiny his mother), something that didn’t sit right with Marvel at the time, so the plotline was dropped. Mystique is eventually revealed to be Kurt’s mother (X-Men Unlimited (1st series) #4. For more about his origin, read the Nightcrawler Spotlight.
