Daredevil #174 features the 1st appearance of the Hand + the 2nd cover appearance of Elektra and her 3rd appearance overall!
Overstreet 2023 NM- 9.2 value = $50.
According to the CGC Census Report as of Tuesday, August 22, 2023, out of a total of 873 Universal copies graded, only 234 copies were graded in 9.8 with 0 copies graded higher!
With these statistics in mind, this represents a rarity factor of 26.80% of the total population.
However, this is the much RARER Newsstand Edition Variant, which means that you can estimate that ONLY 2-4% of all 9.8s are Newsstand Edition copies!

Published in September of 1981, Daredevil #174 is one of the major KEY first appearance issues within the iconic Frank Miller run! For example, after Daredevil #168 (origin and 1st appearance of Elektra), Daredevil #170 (1st appearance of the Kingpin in the Daredevil title), Daredevil #176 (1st appearance of Stick), and Daredevil #183 (1st meeting of Daredevil & the Punisher), Daredevil #174 is the most significant, as it features the 1st appearance of the Hand—the ninja assassin clan who trained Elektra!
In addition, Frank Miller positioned Elektra next to Daredevil with the Gladiator crouched between them—all in battle mode to face the Hand (whose silhouettes appear along the beautiful lime green background), as she wields her saís in just her 2nd cover appearance (3rd appearance overall) in the history of comics!
Furthermore, instead of the typical “The Man Without Fear” being printed underneath the Daredevil logo; we have Daredevil “…ELEKTRA & THE GLADIATOR…,” which leads into the caption on the bottom right-hand corner: …FIGHTING AN ARMY OF ASSASSINS!
Moreover, the Hand made their silver screen appearances on the critically acclaimed Marvel Daredevil Streaming Series (2015-2018)! Therefore, it’s more than likely we’ll eventually see them again—possibly in “Daredevil: Born Again” (18 episodes), which is scheduled to be released on Disney+ in the Spring of 2024!
In closing, I purchased this PERFECTLY WRAPPED & CENTERED Newsstand Edition Variant copy from My Comic Shop in December of 2022! I am super proud to own this immaculate copy and look forward to watching it appreciate each year!
