Jeff Smith story, cover, and art

Synopsis
After Bartleby saves the crew from The Hooded One, Thorn must guide them through a nest of Ghost Circles which effectively takes care of the rat creatures who were chasing them. Lucius is found alive (thanks to Ted) and, unfortunately, learns of Jonathan Oaks’ fate. The Venu then take him into custody as a traitor.

The Slab
Second highest graded Signature Series copy! My raw book signed by Jeff at the 2022 San Diego Comic Com. Big thanks to the great Rich Henn for facilitating! I’ve always had trouble finding straight 9.8s of this issue for whatever reason. This could become a 9.8 with a professional spot press but CGC won’t allow pressers other than their own to keep a yellow label. Hopefully, this will policy change. Officially graded on December 1, 2022.

Inside The Comic
Twenty pages of story, two pages of letters, and two pages of ads. The inside front cover has a drawing of Thorn in front of the gang from page 5 with the black & white “coloring” reversed. The brief prologue is on the top left and the credits are as follows: Written and Drawn by Jeff Smith, Cover Color by Elizabeth Lewis. For Cartoon Books: Vijaya Iyer as President, Kathleen Glosan as Production Manager, Steve Hamaker as Product Designer and Kevin Spain for Shipping and Archiving. The back cover has a panel from page 18 with Smiley telling Fone Bone, “There’s always time for science.”

Bone-a-Fides
The letters are extremely positive with praise for #40 along with several mentions of one of Fone Bone’s most famous lines, “Now you’re messing’ with my girl!”, and Thorn’s reply “Messing with your girl, huh?”. Another fan mentioned finding Bone in Disney Adventures magazine and Jeff took the time to thank Marv Wolfman and Heidi McDonald for their assistance in that regard.

A couple more mention Rose #1 and how much they love Charles Vess’ art. One even asked if any of the original pages were for sale. Jeff replied that they were for sale at Charles’ website (www.greenmanpress.com, which still exists today) and apologized for the late release of #2 which would finally see the shelves in March 2001.

A beautiful letter from a lady named Joy Ting closed out the Bone-a-Fides. She described her journey from Marvel and DC to the pages of Bone thanks to her “comic dork” friends at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. She knew that the saga was coming to an end and had to express her thanks for a story well told.

Ads
The first ad is for Rose #2 and shows a panel from the book with Rose and her dogs. It includes a quote from iComics Reviews that said: “Smith and Vess have raised the bar for anyone else attempting to create a fantasy comic; people are going to be comparing other works to Rose for a long time.” The second ad is for the 12” Kingdok figure and the inside back cover has an ad for Special Edition Bone No. 1 (better known as the ) with the same graphics as last issue. It had more info about what it would feature including 24 digitally remastered pages in never-before-seen full color, a new cover by Jeff, and an 8-page illustrated commentary by comics historian R.C. Harvey.

Estimated Copies Sold thru Diamond: 17574

Bone Flipbook in Color

The legendary Bone Flipbook was remastered in color for the first Bone Deluxe Edition: The Valley (2025). The great Tom Gaadt colored the pages, remastered the art, and updated the original credits. This version is about twice as thick as the original but still works as well when flipping the pages in rapid succession. It was available as an add-on to the Kickstarter rewards and I’m sure it will do so again for the next Deluxe Edition.
