Owner's Description

The story featured in Issue #46 is entitled “The Explanation” as we finally learn something about Mera’s whereabouts these last few issues. In the story, Mera gets Aquaman into an ambulance and rides with him to a hospital. On the way, she reviews what has happened to her recently: she was abducted by exiled Atlantean thieves working hand-in-hand with the crime syndicate. The syndicate had recently gained the services of the now-dead scientist, whose invention allowed them to create artificial whirlpools, and, with Mera's hard-water powers, the criminals could easily loot ships at sea. Mera was told (falsely) by the syndicate boss that Aquaman was also their captive, and would be harmed if she refused to help them. Finally, she was freed from her cell when a thug Aquaman fought against slammed into the release mechanism. She fought past her guards, managed to return to the sea, and found Aquaman, rescuing him with her powers as the whirlpool mechanism in the crooks' headquarters malfunctioned and exploded. In the meantime, Vulko tells Narkran that Atlantis may return to the surface if the quake activity continues, and Narkran is overjoyed, telling the scientist that Narkran shall rule over a surface kingdom. Meanwhile, Aquagirl is taken in by rebels who wish to end Narkran's increasingly despotic rule, and Aqualad still battles with the Bugala.

Well, we finally found a 9.6 of Issue #46, which ended a several year quest. Our John Fantucchio Pedigree copy of Issue #43 is one of four highest graded. Fantucchio was a well-known artist in '60s fandom, drawing covers for RBCC and the Comic Buyers Guide (including the #1 cover), and even worked as an illustrator for the CIA from 1963 to 1988. During this time he amassed full runs of Marvel, DC, Gold Key, Charlton, ACG and Dell, among others, keeping them locked away and untouched, which resulted in uniformly high grades and near perfect cover inks. After his passing in 2016, the family auctioned the collection through Comiclink. Even though the books have no distinctive markings, many were CGC graded. We left a bid for this one in the silent bidding portion of a weekly Heritage Auction at about three times the internet bid. Guess what, we got it at our max, funny how that seems to always happen. I guess I am either a genius at bidding or…..you can fill in the blank LOL. It is tied atop the census with four other copies.

We acquired the book from the 12/4/2022 Heritage Auction,
