Owner's Description

In Issue #17, Poseidon, Olympian god of the sea, peers into the future with the help of Proteus, his court sorcerer, and beholds Mera, who he wishes to take her for a wife. Proteus provides Poseidon with "time pods" that allow him to travel back and forth in time. When Poseidon abducts Mera, Aquaman steals one of the Olympian's time pods and follows him. Zeus proposes a contest to retrieve a golden apple beneath the sea, with Mera going to the winner. Despite Poseidon's cheating, Aquaman manages to win the contest. Angered, Poseidon takes Mera and flees to Aquaman's time, with Aquaman and Aqualad in hot pursuit. With the help of Zeus, they save both Mera and Poseidon from a berserk creature created by Mera. Poseidon vows to mend his ways, and Aquaman gives him a pod with which he can travel back to his normal era.

Issue #17 features another very tough black cover, with just two books ever graded above 9.0. Our 9.6 comes from the Pacific Coast Collection, which is generally considered to be the greatest Silver Age collection to ever surface. It was brought to market by Robert Roter after he discovered portions of it for sale on E-Bay in 1999. The books were marketed through PCE over the next several years and contained over 7,000 comics and magazines that included Marvel, DC, and Gold Key among others, covering a time span between 1961 and 1977. Many of the highest graded Marvel and DC issues from the early '60s hail from this collection with exceptional page quality. The books do not exhibit any distinguishing markings.

Our book is not just the single highest graded copy, but also the only copy to ever be graded above 9.2. We acquired the book in that same private transaction with a friend and fellow collector in May 2023.

2024 Update: While our book is still King, there is now a 9.4 in the census.

2026 Update: Once again, changes in the census have hit this set as a book from the FANTAST collection recently received a 9.6, making our book one of two highest graded. Ours has better quality pages and hails from the Pacific Coast Collection, but it’s still a blow.
