Owner's Description

1:1 ratio cover. Renaud's covers always have a sort of ethereal finish to them. Like they have been smoothed, oiled, and polished to shine. They are very nice. I love Sonja's "come at me" pose in this image. Eye contact is direct, swords are lowered, very much at the ready, the her grip on each blade is correct. The only thing I don't like about it is her stance, which isn't ready - but a swordswoman of her skill could dip into stance far quicker than you could cross the distance from where the viewer stands, based on the image. I really want to talk about the composition of the art. Renaud doesn't use any complimentary color schemes to make the image pop, everything is sort of a warm brown. What really makes this art work is the composition, which is a very simple pyramid portrait composition. Sonja's cloak and the flags in the army behind her help frame and reinforce the shape drawn by her swords - which leads, ultimately, to Sonja's face atop the pyramid. Supporting this, we have the clouds in the background, which may appear to do nothing, or to be random - but squint a little bit, and you'll see how they gently reinforce the eye to the center of the image by (mostly) all pointing in, almost like a halo. Really nicely done.
Overall? I totally bought this cover from my LCS when it came out and I still have my raw copy. Stunning and well done.
