Owner's Description

I initially bought an 9.6 copy of this issue for our DC 80-page Giant set. It feature reprints of 4 earlier books with very cool covers. It is also the first of 13 80-page Giants under the Batman title. This WP 9.8 comes from the Green River Collection and is tied for highest graded. Assembled by the most notorious collector of all the pedigrees, William J. Stevens II, who at one time was considered the prime suspect in the Green River serial killings. His father ran a drugstore in Spokane, Washington, from where Stevens and his brother took home comic books. Even though the actual serial killer was identified in 2001 using DNA tests, Stevens was a professional con man nonetheless, and after his death in 1991, his comic collection was sold to John Hauser to pay for legal fees. The collection consisted of nearly 1,700 Silver Age Marvel and DC, beginning around 1962, with most featuring a red date stamp on the front cover.

I went hard after the 9.8 Pacific Coast copy in the August 2021 Heritage Auction, but gave up went the book reached $6,600. Oh well, you cannot win them all and fortunately I managed to snare this copy at a fraction of that cost. Sometimes the books you lose at auction work out for the best, as sometimes a couple of collectors target a certain book and it ends of going for far more than it’s worth. Unfortunately, I have been on the other side of that scenario all too often as well, but this one had a happy ending for us.*
