We have never collected Doctor Strange, except for the early Strange Tales issues where he was a back-up to the FF stories. I am not sure we will target them in the future either, but we have started buying some of the 1968 Marvel #1s, and have already bought Captain America #100, Hulk #102 and now Doctor Strange #169, each of which continue the numbering of Tales of Suspense, Tales To Astonish and Strange Tales, respectively. In every case, 9.8s are plentiful, but can be somewhat pricey, and do seem to move up and down regularly. So you don’t rush out to buy these, you just establish acquiring one as a long-term goal and set a reasonable limit, at least that has been our approach.
What we have found is that, if you are patient, usually you will get one sooner or later. We acquired our WP 9.8 from the 4/3/2023 Heritage Auction after leaving a hidden bid at the low end of the range in which they have been trading. As always seems to be the case, when we checked out the auction we had gotten it is at our max price. Dealers will scoop these books up if they are cheap, so you really cannot expect bargains, but we still paid less than half of some examples, which were undoubtedly bought by newbies.
