Issue #298 is a mini-key featuring the Origin and first appearance of the Silver Age Clayface, Matt Hagen. Our 9.6 is the single highest graded copy of this issue with just a single 9.4 trailing it. We acquired the book from the 9/8/2022 Heritage Auction.
Strange story on this one. I really was not at all going for it, but I placed an early bid on it about 2-3 weeks before the Live Auction. At the time, the book was already very expensive, so I just placed a single bid one step above the current level and immediately became the high bidder. There was never another bid placed in the internet or live auction. If there had been, I was honestly out, as it was more than I wanted to pay for any Detective, which is not that high a priority for us, at least not until we finish some other sets. It really screwed up our auction, as we had a limited amount to spend and had to pass on some books we wanted more. Live and learn, but at least it’s unique. And if registry points are supposed to at all track auction prices, this one is due a huge boost.
