Owner's Description
Silver Surfer #3 introduced Mephisto, Marvel's primary version of the Devil, who became the Silver Surfer's greatest foe, returning for two 2-part sagas during the Surfer's first series. Mephisto's 1st appearance was an impressive one from the start - the John Buscema cover for this issue is outstanding, depicting the noble Silver Silver battling an enormous Mephisto against an eye-pleasing red background.
The name "Mephisto" comes from the character of Mephistopheles from the famous German legend of Faust, a man who makes a pact with the devil, AKA Mephistopheles, selling his soul for all eternity in exchange for worldly pleasures and unlimited knowledge. For over 50 years now Mephisto has tormented Marvel's greatest heroes in a variety of ways. Mephisto would return twice during the initial Silver Surfer series, in #8-9 and #16-17. In the early 1990s Mephisto goads on Thanos during the famous moment in Infinity Gauntlet #1 when the Mad Titan uses the all-powerful Gauntlet to destroy half of all life in the Universe. Mephisto is perhaps most famously known for his role in the controversial 2007 Spider-Man saga, "One More Day" in which he offers Peter and Mary Jane Parker a way to save Aunt May after the beloved elderly woman who raised Peter is shot. In exchange for saving May, Peter and Mary Jane agree to live in a new reality in which they were never married back in 1987. Mephisto also famously drove the Scarlet Witch insane by revealing that her twin sons were soul fragments created by Mephisto's manipulation. Losing her sons this way drove Wanda to kill several of her fellow Avengers in the "Avengers Disassembled" saga. Later in the saga "House of M", the insane Wanda eliminates most of the mutant race simply by speaking the words "No More Mutants".
Our 9.6 is tied for second highest graded. We acquired the book from the 11/19/2013 CL Auction.
