Owner's Description

I was really fortunate to get this book from the owner of the 'NO ONE CAN KILL SUPERMAN!' collection. We were done negotiating on the bulk of those books when I was able to make an offer to add this book and the Superman: The Man of Steel 18 9.9. This book was not a member of the competitive set at the time. I am happy that he accepted and even happier to have met a really nice person while collecting...

I have included pictures of both versions of this book in the second picture slot. I wanted to try to show the difference in colors. The difference is very subtle but you can see that the actual Platinum book is more silvery in color, while the Error is subdued and less silvery. To me, it is such a subtle difference that I am surprised that CGC was able to catch this difference in the first place. There were only three 9.8 copies of this Platinum Error in the census when I picked it up in December 2019.

This book has an interesting history here... when I first created my set in 2018 it was a member of the competitive set along with the Death of Superman Platinum TPB, as well as the 2005 Mattel reprint of Superman: The Man of Steel 19, which came with an action figure and had a completely different cover. The set itself was also in a bit of disarray, books were not ordered properly and there were still books that had not been graded so there were no slots for them. Somewhere around late 2018 to early 2019 this book, the Platinum TPB, and the 2005 reprint were all removed. I don't think anyone requested that, I believe it was just some Registry cleanup... I was still new and wasn't asking many questions.

From that point on both the Regular and this Manufacturing Error book were interchangeable in the Adventures of Superman 500 Poly-Bagged Platinum Edition competitive slot, even though they were treated as two different books in the census population.

When I obtained this book in late 2019 it wasn't because I wanted to add it to this set, it was just because of my joy of collecting the books from this set.

Flash forward to January 2024 and there were much clearer set/slot guidelines published. One of the Eligible Variants for slots were Manufacturing Errors. By the time this book became a member of this set again in January 2024 there were now a total of eight 9.8's and 42 graded total. Based on the new guidelines as well as the book always being seen differently in the census, as a manufacturing error, I believe it correct that it is back in this set.

Note - I have 9.8 examples of the other two removed in 2018/19 in my Custom Set if you'd like to check them out. As this set sits now, I don't think there are any other books that would come into existence that would get a slot... unless of course that 499 second print, or 683 third print end up actually existing after all, which pretty much everyone agrees are just some mock up scans that made their way on-line.
