Unlike most of the stories in this series, this one I believe is fiction, although it likely depicts some events that may have occurred somewhere during the course of the war. Just not to this submarine. The real Sea Dog, SS401, was not commissioned until 1944 and this tale takes place in 1943 aboard the Seadog.
