TMNT: The Last Ronin Issue #1, published in February 2022, sets the stage for the dark, dystopian future of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles universe. The issue opens with a lone, masked turtle navigating a heavily guarded and technologically advanced New York City. This turtle, later revealed to be Michelangelo, is on a mission of vengeance to defeat the Foot Clan and avenge his fallen brothers and mentor.
The narrative reveals a bleak world where the Foot Clan, led by Oroku Hiroto, Shredder's grandson, has taken over the city. Michelangelo, driven by grief and anger, carries the weapons of his deceased brothers—Leonardo's katana, Raphael's sai, and Donatello's bo staff—symbolizing their presence and his burden of loss.
Flashbacks interspersed throughout the issue provide glimpses into the tragic events that led to this point, including the deaths of his brothers and Splinter. The issue ends on a cliffhanger, with Michelangelo severely injured and teetering on the brink of death, but saved at the last moment by April O'Neil.
