Issue #38 features a fantastic Doctor Doom cover and appearances by Fantastic Four and Doctor Doom in a story that is continued in Fantastic Four #73. Our 9.8 is tied with one other copy for highest graded. We acquired the book from the 9/14/2024 Heritage Auction.
There is a somewhat strange story on this one. We actually still own a 9.6, which looks like the better of the two books to my poor eyes. So when this book came up we made a very half-hearted stab at it and actually paid less for it than we did for our 9.6. What that tells me is patience is the key to putting together a collection on a budget, at least with respect to Marvels: sooner or later, books with fall through the cracks at auctions. That being said, patience does not work so well when you are close to completing a set and are lacking a rare book, as it may be years until you see another one. Honestly, my advice to anyone would be not to collect the way we do, forget about completing sets, just target covers you like and buy when the price is right. I wish I were that disciplined, Type As like myself should never collect comics LOL.
