Owner's Description

Star Wars 51: Resurrection of Evil!

Writer: David Michelinie, Penciller: Walt Simonson, Inker: Tom Palmer, Cover artist: Walt Simonson.

Signed by Walt Simonson on 10/12/12 at New York Comic Con.

This issue is well known for two reasons. The first reason is that it began probably the best run of the series by the power team of David Michelinie and Walt Simonson. The second reason is that the story introduced a super-weapon known as the Tarkin which was similar in principle (but not appearance) to the second Death Star of Return of the Jedi.

In 2012, an article known as Comic Book Legends Revealed #391 (source: https://www.cbr.com/comic-book-legends-revealed-391/ ) provided background on the Tarkin Super Weapon and why it uncovered some of the plot for the Return of the Jedi film (in development at the time). The article quoted Walter Simonson from Modern Masters Volume 8:

"We began finding out what would be in the third movie, accidentally. We didn't do it deliberately. David's first story after the second movie: the Empire's building a new Death Star. Lucasfilm said: 'Sorry, you can't do that.' Why not? 'We can't tell you.' So, we said okay, how about if we do a giant cannon floating in space, with no circular shell? 'Okay, fine, no problem.' So we called it the Tarkin, wrote exactly the same story with the same gizmo, and nobody cared."
