SET DETAILS
Owner's Description
I added this book to my collection, and competitive set, shortly after I had accomplished the goal of making my entire competitive set all 9.8 and above! At this point I may have lost my mind collecting these books! I thought that I would be able to take a pretty long break after finally finding that last 9.8 but my mind immediately shifted to... "I might as well keep adding Signature Series books when I can..." Crazy!
I had originally decided to keep these die-cut covers in Universal only, mainly because I like the way they look and wanted them to be free of signatures... but when I shifted my focus to other Signature Series books I ran across this one and Superman 78 which was signed by Dan Jurgen's. I decided to pass on the Jurgens book at the time and instead go for this one... I already have a ton of Jurgens signatures and this one added a bit more POP and uniqueness to this set! Plus, I can still keep the Universal in my Custom Set (check it out!).
When John Henry was a baby on his mama's knee
He picked up a hammer and steel
He said "This hammer's gonna be the death of me, Lord, Lord
This hammer's gonna be the death of me" This Old Hammer - Folk Song
I think it is really cool that this John Henry Irons took up the mantle of Superman to honor his memory and used a big hammer! I had all of the Steel books as well. I really liked this character and his motivation for becoming a hero.
I also really like Shaquille O'Neal... from everything I know he is a really decent and generous person, and he is an Army Brat... me being a Marine I appreciate that.
He is also a big Superman fan! It was cool that he played Steel (1997) even though the movie wasn't a big hit... currently 3.0 on IMDb. But hey, at least he was recommended for an award in 1998 for his performance... oh wait, that was a Razzie for Worst Actor... on the bright side, he was in good company... other nominees that year included Val Kilmer (The Saint), Steven Seagal (Fire Down Below), and Jon Voight (Anaconda)... they were all beaten by Kevin Costner who took home the Worst Actor Razzie for The Postman! So he basically wasn't the worst that year... YES!!
My wife and I always crack up whenever we see Shaq in anything else, such as Grown Ups. So basically I enjoy having his signature on this book and in this set not necessarily for his acting abilities but for his being a good human being that happened to play a character from this storyline in a pretty campy movie from the 1990's.
It's just really fitting that his signature is on this book and I'm happy to have this book in this set now...I think it adds a nice unique touch!
And because a book signed by Shaq deserves more than one measly toy, the second picture slot contains my Steel action figures… my favorite is bottom center and yes, the two up top are different… the one on the left is the chrome version (can’t remember for sure if it was a chase but I am guessing it was). Enjoy!
