Owner's Description

Issue #121 is the final installment in Arnold Drake’s classic Doom Patrol ending one of the longest continuous runs in the silver age at 41 issues with the same team. This iconic "Death of the Doom Patrol" issue was published for September/October, 1968 and features a dark and ominous cover by Joe Orlando. This would be the last issue of Doom Patrol until 1973. Bruno Premiani did most of the interior art while Bob Brown handled nearly all of the covers (even though the two occasionally switched). For this last chapter Bob Brown is absent but Joe Orlando fills in on the cover and it’s really beautiful.

While this is the last issue of the original 60s series (1963-1968), the volume resumes in 1973 with reprints that have slightly altered covers and early My Greatest Adventure stories as backups. This book features the unprecedented "Death" of the superhero team. Our 9.6 is tied with the Pacific Coast copy for highest graded, but having seen them both, to me this is the nicer of the two books-and I’m a Pacific Coast nut.

We acquired the book from the 7/22/2025 CL Auction, in what turned out to be a very spirited last second bidding flurry. There were actually eight registered bids, and maybe more that did not meet the quickly rising minimum, in the final 10 seconds. We were the high bidder at roughly three times the shown top bid with 10 seconds to go. While I figured we were probably safe, in light of how long we had been looking for this upgrade of our 9.2, I raised our max bid with about 3 second to go. Unbeknownst to me, someone had just placed a bid $11 above our previously hidden bid, so had I not thrown in that safety bid, we would have lost the book since our secret max bid was not showing-if it had been, the $10 bid over ours would been rejected by the system. I have been the high bidder many times on CL, but lost the book because of that rule, it was nice to finally be on the winning side of one. I am not a fan of CL auctions because of the uncertainty, but sometimes it does keep the prices down if you are buying, since I imagine all the bidders thought they were placing a winning bid because of how low the high bid was with 10 seconds to go. CRAZY, if there had been the opportunity for bidders to bid again, the price may have well doubled, as this is an extremely tough issue to find in high grade. I am just happy as Hell we won this one!
