Story Title: Who's Life Is It, Anyway?
Summary:
The Professor uses his newly healed legs to play basketball in the Danger Room. He receives another mental stun blast, this time really bad!
Storm shows up & speaks with him about Kitty's alienation from her because of her recently strengthened powers and change of attitude as leader of the X-Men.
Meanwhile, Kitty & Doug Ramsey are having fun at the mall. Doug wants Kitty to accompany him when he goes to the Massachusetts Acadamy, where he has been accepted with a scholarship. Kitty is caught between a rock & a hard place. She used to go there, but it is run by the Hellfire Club, sworn enemies of the X-Men, and she doesn't want to say no to Doug but can't see how to balance that with not revealing to him the true evil nature of the Academy & the mutant nature of herself.
Wolverine speaks with Colossus about his feelings for Kitty & he tells Logan that he will not pursue her if she is serious about Doug Ramsey.
Storm has a run in with some common street thugs in the Bronx Botanical Gardens. One less gang of idiots to worry about!
Back at the mansion, Kitty convinces the others to let her go with Doug to the Academy, provided that Prof X stays in constant mental monitoring of her. They believe that the Hellfire club is currently understaffed due to their belief that the White Queen, Emma Frost is still in a coma. Sebastian Shaw is their only real worry & they don't expect him to take on the entire team of X-Men by himself.
The Prof also wants to know what the Hellfire Club wants with Doug Ramsey. He figures they know him to be a mutant, with a gift for human & computer languages.
Storm then sweeps Kitty into the air to have a heart to heart & clears the air (no pun intended) between them.
Later, at the airport, Kitty & Doug board a plane & take off to the Academy. During the flight, Emma Frost reveals herself to them & Kitty knows them to be in BIG trouble! She calls out to Prof X, but he & the X-Men have been whisked away to fight in the Secret Wars & have no idea of the trouble she is in...
The X-Men continue on in the Secret Wars #1, while Kitty & Doug's adventure continues in NEW MUTANTS #15...
Personal Comments:
I had to read this in order to continue properly through the storyline of the New Mutants series. I hadn't really read this series yet so some of the issues going on with the characters was unknown to me at the time.
It was this issue though that caused me to check out the Secret Wars Mini Series. But while that was going on, Kitty & Doug's troubles were continuing in the New Mutants series.
Looks like they're in BIG trouble. Hopefully, with the X-Men currently out of pocket, The New Mutants can get them out of this mess!
