I acquired this piece through an eBay auction that I didn’t watch that closely. I didn't find the cover appealing but it was #700, and the gold edition, so I entered a low bid to start out with. I decided to forget about the auction to focus on other items, in the end I got this one for only $16.50.
This piece originally came in the first generation holder with a red "modern grade" label, only used in the first year or so of CGC's existence. Unfortunately the holder had several scratches that really diminished the eye appeal. Had the previous owner taken better care of the piece, it could have been a much more unique "relic" from the early days of CGC, the red label coloring also complimented the gold on the cover nicely. At least the book displays much better in its current holder.
I didn't realize what I had until I set up this set in the registry. I still can’t believe that the least expensive book I have is one the the most valuable in terms of registry points. Previous sales results for other 9.8 copies of this Gold Edition gave me a new found respect for my copy, the cover has also since grown on me. I believe this edition was given to retailers only, I do not remember seeing or hearing about this edition as a 12 year old in 1994.
