Synopsis: Caught in a raging storm, the X-Men are found by a passing Japanese freighter and allowed to board. However, they are not allowed to communicate with the outside world, as the ship is on a mission. Jean Grey, meanwhile, leaves the mansion, ending a chapter in her already eventful life. Lilandra tries to cheer up Charles, but he has a lot of thinking to do. He recalls how he came to form the X-Men in the first place. After losing his first love, Moira MacTaggert, he bummed around the Mediterranean before ending up in Cairo. There, he met a young pickpocket, before encountering another telepath for the first time. This was Amahl Farouk, a malevolent entity who Charles immediately knew was trouble. They fought on the Astral Plane as their physical bodies sat in a Cairo bar. Charles struggled against his powerful opponent, but finally focused all his energies in a single blow to Farouk’s brain. In the physical world, Farouk collapsed and Xavier left, now knowing how truly deadly mutant powers could be in the wrong hands. His new aim led him to form the X-Men, to protect humanity from creatures like Farouk. Lilandra says that there is nothing left for him on Earth and asks Charles to accompany her back home. Charles finds himself agreeing with her.
Notes: - This was the first appearance of Amahl Farouk. He survived the battle with Xavier and later took on the New Mutants in New Mutants (1st series) #32-34. - The scene where Xavier battles Farouk was shown again in New Mutants (1st series) #34, when he took over the New Mutants. In that flashback, he was shown to be wearing a pink suit, but here it is white. His assistants were also different to those in this issue. - Charles' battle with Lucifer in Tibet was shown in X-Men (1st series) #20. - Misty Knight and Colleen Wing were, at the time, regulars in the Power Man & Iron Fist title.
