Label Notes
Jeff Smith story, cover and art. Acetate cover.
Synopsis
Released as a mail-away from Wizard magazine, the Wizard Ace Edition reprints Bone #1 with new cover art and high quality pages.
The Slab
Tied with a few others for the highest graded SS! My raw copy signed and sketched by Jeff (Smiley) at the 2009 Baltimore Diamond Retailer's summit and witnessed by GOTHAMCENTRAL (with help from Joel Elad). Graded by CGC on November 16, 2009.
Inside The Comic
The acetate portion of the cover has Fone Bone, the locusts, and the word balloons. On the die-cut cover below the acetate, you’ll see Smiley yelling “WEEE-HAW!” with a locust on his tongue in the upper right and Phoney Bone on the left screaming “Whatever you do—don’t stick out your tongue!! PITT! POO! YUCK!” with a couple locusts in his trap. All of the dialogue matches the panels inside #1 except “WEEE-HAW!”
The inside front cover has the typical “brief prologue” found in the rest of the series followed by a much longer introduction to the genre of Bone along with a hint of what comes after issue 1. There’s no author listed but it was likely written by someone at Wizard Press. The credits are as follows: Bone #1: Written and Drawn by Jeff Smith, Cover by Jeff Smith, Cover colors by Elizabeth Lewis. Cartoon Books: Vijaya Iyer as President, Karen Root as Assistant Publisher, and Andries Mulder as Production Assistant. Wizard Press: Gareb S. Shamus as President/Publisher, Fred Pierce as Executive VP, Patrick McCallum as Editor-In-Chief, Brian Cunningham as Editor, Steve Blackwell as Big Art Kahuna, Jim McLaughlin and Kathy Newman for Promotions, Helene Dubrowsky as Production Director, and Matt Senreich as Angel o’Mercy.
Twenty-four total pages just like the original #1 with no ads or letters. The pages themselves are slick and resemble the quality of the Bone Kickstarter books in the mid-2020s. The inside back cover has a full preview of Bone #28 with the cover art and the following captions: “Bone is on his own again! And he’s hanging out at Cartoon Books!”, “1st Issue in the Rockjaw: Master of the Eastern Border Saga!”, “Bone 28 by Jeff Smith shipping in March [1997] from Cartoon Books!” The back cover behind the acetate has an ad for the first three Bone collected editions (Out From Boneville, The Great Cow Race, and Eyes of the Storm). The acetate back cover has an ad for Wizard Ace Edition #67 with a cover by Jim Lee featuring Iron Man and The Thing.

Bone Deluxe Edition: The Valley, Kickstarter Hardcover Slipcased Edition with Remarque
This is the latest publication from Cartoon Books and features the combined first two chapters in their largest ever format. A few people complained about the thinness of the pages which enabled readers to see the impression of the next page. Personally, I don’t see this as much of an issue at all. My favorite section in the back of the book is called Tales from the Inkwell which recounts Jeff’s experiences in the early days of drawing Bone and shows his first full page comic strip from 1986 (currently in the collection of the Anonymous Collector).
All of the hardcovers included six prints of Image Comics’ reprint covers, a temporary tattoo, and a die-cut Thorn Map bookmark. There were three editions of the hardcover: unsigned, signed, and remarqued. This is a remarque edition with Fone Bone & Ted. Some of the others I’ve seen have better sketches but I still love mine!
The overall production of the books is great and will be the only way I read Out From Boneville from now on (best publication of Chapter 2 is still the IDW The Great Cow Race Artist’s Edition which I describe in Bone #10).
